Also, I find it absolutely bewildering that a 'mech survives center torso destruction, but the pilot doesn't.

I came across that in, I believe, Titans of Steel, something fairly similar though considerably older, and the answer was perfectly reasonable to me-- the cockpit isn't the entire torso; only that got destroyed, killing the pilot, but the rest of the mech is more or less intact. It's like if a rock fell straight down onto the main body of a car. The passengers are dead, the interior is trashed, but the rest of the car is still perfectly functional.

Alternatively, does this allow you to kill a pilot without (significantly) damaging the mech? Because that could be an abstraction of it too.

You kill the pilot without damaging the 'mech by shooting the 'mech's head off, as the head is where the cockpit/pilot is located.

The part I find weird isn't so much that CT kills pilot (this is... odd... but certainly makes "MechWarrior" a more appropriately dangerous profession) but rather that the 'mech itself is seemingly indestructible. Like you destroy the part of the 'mech that makes up the 'mech, while leaving the part where the pilot is contained entirely intact... but the pilot dies and the 'mech is okay.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

If you're referring to how you can salvage cored mechs, it's explained in game that you salvage parts of mechs each time. Once you get 3 parts you get the whole mech.

So even if you blow it to bits, there's still usable parts.

If you kill the pilot without really damaging the mech (keep injuring them or sniping the cockpit) then you get all three parts in one go.

The thing that's weird is why these mechs don't blow up. They go nuclear in all the other games, but in this one they don't.

I think he is referring to if your mechs go down you can still recover it and just fix what got blown off but the pilot can die.  Even if it was killed only by CT hits.

I wish you could stockpile the salvage and use them as a way to replace lost limbs on mechs.  Not so much for a cheaper or faster way to fix them, but so I don't have to reinstall the components that got blown off every time.

Yeah. Had a 'mech that wasn't fixed yet, so I deployed a Locust in it's stead. Was going fine then abruptly got donutted. This killed the pilot but left the 'mech still sitting in my mechbay all fine and stuff. The realization that CT destruction is more hazardous to the pilot than the 'mech is a "wait, what?" moment.

Huh, that is weird. I'd expect a cored mech to become salvage. I've been lucky  enough to not actually lose a mech yet (though my light mechs get awfully close sometimes).

I think I read somewhere way back in the beta that they didn't want to potentially screw the player over to the point where you don't have any mechs left. New pilots are easy to pick up, new mechs considerably less so.

They obviously don't realize that losing is fun. Mods please?

I mean even in the tutorial they somehow manage to rescue your mech despite you ejecting next to an entire army in the middle of a revolution.

You could get, like, four or five decent sandwiches for that money. More if you made them yourself.
So I guess the question is if you like mechs better than sandwiches. And how hungry you are.

Personally, I'd say yes. I've got 6 hours in already and it only got released yesterday.

So I'm about 16 hours in, did 3 campaign missions.

My current team consists of mostly Shadowhawks. The chassis has really grown on me. It's got good flexibility. Great survivability and is pretty fast.

Amazingly, my top performing Shadowhawk is one I kitted out on a whim. It has max armor, lrm 10, lrm 5, lrm 5, jumpjets, and a flamer. You might be wondering why I'd put a flamer on an lrm boat, but it isn't an lrm boat. The lrms are only there to give the pilot something to do while they run up and punch things.

The chassis's performance is incredible. I highly recommend it.

Another really good mech I've noticed is the Lightning. It's so tanky, has okay-ish speed, but can be equipped with some really really strong weaponry. I have one with a PPC, med laser and 20 lrm. Probably my highest kill count mech so far.

I have a special place in my heart for Shadow Hawks. When I was a kid, the Shadowhawk was the first mech mini I painted up, and I used it a lot in a mechwarrior campaign we ran, remember getting some clan salvage and sticking an ultra ac/20 on it at one point :D

In TT Shadowhawks kinda are a jack-of-all-trades, not really great at anything, but in the game they really shine because various weapon systems (like the AC/5) got a nice boost, so lasers are not always the be all and all all!

I've only a couple missions in (no argo yet), but I already have a Shadowhawk piece and am looking forward to building up.

You mention the lightning, I don't think i'm familiar with that mech?

This is probably the game I have anticipated the most in a long time. My dog murdered (I could tell by the look in his eyes that it was premeditated) my laptop charging cord the night before release. I have ordered a new one but it can't come soon enough, I want to get in on the fun!
