Oh no I know about the Unsteady->Knockdown thing, I mean that I've seen the bars fill up to within a pixel of full, visually indifferent from a complete bar, multiple times now, using different loadouts and mechs. But only on the AI.

I progress along the story line, and I'm just farming mechs as well as power levelling noobie mechwarriors. 

4.0 to 4.5 skull missions
1. Finisher/Sniper (Initiative 2).  Assault mech with Master Tactician + Multi-shot.  Highlander with Gauss, LRM20, LRM10.
2. Missile boat (Initiative 3).  Heavy mech Master Tactician + Bulwark.  Orion with 2x LRM15 and 1x LRM10. 
3. Missile boat (Initiative 3).  Heavy mech Master Tactician + Bulwark.  Orion with 2x LRM20. 
4. Recon/Brawler (Initiative 3).  Heavy mech Master Tactician + Bulwark.  Black Knight with 2x PPC. 

2.0 to 3.5 skull missions
1. Finisher/Sniper (Initiative 3).  Heavy mech with Master Tactician + Multi-shot.  Jagermech with 3x AC/5.
2. Missile boat (Initiative 3).  Medium mech (any noob even with 2/2/2/3 skill).  Centurion with 2x LRM20. 
3. Missile boat (Initiative 3).  Medium mech (any noob even with 2/2/2/3 skill).  Centurion with 2x LRM20. 
4. Recon/Brawler (Initiative 3).  Heavy mech Master Tactician + Bulwark.  Black Knight with 1x PPC. 

Farming lower levels at 2 skulls seems moot when I got to doing 4 skulls+ because the good stuff: gyros, command cockpit drop often.  Downing assault mechs for 3 salvage parts is more work, so I settle for leg shot skills for 2 salvage parts instead only when the numbers are even 4:4. For when the ratio is 4:5+, i aim to kill faster via CT shots instead.

So I picked this up.  Apparently not immediately doing the first story mission is not a great idea.
Didn't help that my character was incapacitated in the very first mission, +100 days.  Add on that I consistently had a revolving door of 2-3 mechs in the repair bay with 15-20 day work orders.  So I had to do some missions with 3 mechs... So I took more hits in turn, losing even more stuff.
I ended up scrapping that campaign since I couldn't comfortably keep up. 

2nd pass around, going much more smoothly.  Also picked up a mod for skipping the intro stuff and got a Grasshopper heavy instead of the Blackjack as a starter. With a 3x salvage cheat.

Has anyone else experienced a weird bug where the game minimizes itself?  It started after I adjusted some settings and I can't figure out why it keeps happening.

I'm playing this with the 5x animation speed 'hack' and 0 delay after turns/firing/etc fix. In MechWarrior you kill 4 tanks by yourself in 20 seconds max, in this 4 mechs [yours] vs. 4 tanks = 20 minutes, the hell?

Anyway it's pretty fun. I'm very glad they took XCOM as an inspiration/reference. Blackjack with its kickboxing and headbutting always makes me giggle.

Well, finally finished the campaign. Have to say, I've gotten 65 hours worth out of this game so far and I imagine I'll play a ton more once they add more to it.

And I'll probably pop in occasionally to do random battles and whatnot. I do enjoy those. Looking forward to them adding in more mission types.

Shame none of the original crew of mechwarriors survived to the end, though. Glitch and Dekker died at the Prison, Behemonth at the Smithon ammo depot, and Medusa to a random pirate while we were on an assassination mission. Of course, a Devastator tank firing an AC/20 to the face will do that. At least we managed to get a complete Highlander out of that mission, so his sacrifice wasn't in vain.

Now what I want is for the game to have a Sandbox mode of the entire Inner Sphere where you start off with the Argo and no campaign stuff to deal with. It was fun and all, and I may want to do it again sometime, but being confined to that little section of the periphery kinda sucks. Especially since until you beat the campaign the game won't even let you go to the Slices of the Successor States that are there. And now that I've beat the campaign I'm not really playing 'struggling mercenary company simulator' anymore. That was probably my favorite part, where I was near broke and just one bad mission away from losing it all.

Now I've got like 14 million c-bills and a hold full of heavy and assault mechs. It'd take a lot of effort to go broke even if I had a string of bad missions.

I'm at 187 hours already, and not even finished the campaign. 
Early on, I read that the story line (SL) missions increase game difficulty. 
I stopped when the minimum planet is at skull 2. 

I then spent travelling to the western most system, taking on .5 to 2 skull missions while I played light and mediums. 

Only after I bagged a Dragon on an assassination contract did I feel I was ready to increase difficulty of contracts by moving forward with the the SL.

The modding community looks to be progressing.  I can't wait for more Long War type options and sandbox type play.

Am I the only one who stopped using glitch due to her irritating VO? Dunno what's worse, the high pitch squeal she has for a voice or the extremely over-eager delivery of memey bullshit she constantly spews.

Also I think I found my favourite tag-team combo in the early game. The starter shadowhawk paired with the centurion you get from the argo. The shadow is pretty barebones, packing a bigass AC10++ and a ML, a dedicated finisher and punching machine, most satisfying kills are when the AC crits and outright deletes a light mech :D
The centurion is similar but it's more of a shotgun blaster, packing an AC5 for midrange work, a ML and the rest is various sizes of my best SRM's I could find. The amount of stability damage and crits is insane and anything that makes it out alive is shortly dealt with by the shadow.

Unfortunately I didn't have the luxury of dropping someone for VO. My first 10-10-10-10 was Corkwood. I don't know if mechwarriors are randomly generated or what, but she had this jokey southern accent thing going on that got pretty grating after a while. But, she was one of my first mechwarriors to actually survive long enough to get really good, so that's what I had. I wish you could preview voice lines when you're hiring mechwarriors!

I just shut off pilot chatter, fixed the problem completely.  I also killed every single cinematic animation it would let me, the game is almost agonizingly long without them, it was honestly painful with them.

Mechwarriors are randomly generated, unless they're one of the starting 4 or have the blue KS/purple Ronin icon. If you're bothered about VOs, you can get a little sample by selecting them in the hiring window (And boy, do I wish I'd bothered doing that. I managed to hire Spenthia, a KS backer with Glitch's VO, while I had Glitch on the team. And only realised I had 2 of the same VOs by the time she'd levelled a bunch and training a different pilot would've been somewhat detrimental to the team composition.)

I don't know, I missed Glitch after she died. She had more personality than a lot of the other mechwarriors.

My two favorites on my team were Goody (posh British lady) and Parry (Irish lady). I also liked Iron, who was this just sort of gruff sounding dwarf looking guy. I had this one guy named Bardiche who I wish had a bit more sampling in his lines in the hiring hall. He ended up being kind of a caricature of a New York thug thing going on. Got old after a bit.

I'm looking forward to modders adding in new VO sets.
