Word of Dev from a recent reddit ama is that lostech is currently story only. That might change in the future, along with a rebalance of it to make more of it actually worth using.

I'm actually having a bit of difficulty getting bigger mechs.

At the moment I'm typically running a quickdraw(my only heavy though it does not feel like one defensively) a blackjack, a griffin, and a hunchback.  And it seems either missions throw me against a bunch of tanks and light locusts, firestarters, and jenners*, or a full lance of heavys and assaults I can't hope to beat.  It's like there is no in between.

Yeah, currently the only good one is the Gauss Rifle. The rest are all outclassed by +++ weapons.

Oh and double heatsinks.

Missions around 2.5 to 3.0 skulls should have some mediums to heavy.

I've been thinking of getting the game, but I've got some questions first. How much content is there? How's the replayability?

There's 7 content but only 3 replayability.

To expand: The campaign is linear, and at least without mods, difficulty increases are gated behind doing story content. Campaign missions will always play out the same ways with the same events and same enemies.

The dynamically generated missions are more random, and difficulty will vary from mission to mission, especially as your XO is (hilariously) bad at his job and you'll often run into unexpected enemies.

On a somewhat more concrete note, I have 38 hours into the game at this point, have not finished it yet, and am still having a blast even just bopping about doing random missions until I decide to do more story stuff.

So, even if replayability isn't great yet I'd say it is worth the money. And they are talking about various additions and expansions to the game, so I expect it'll just get better.

From what little I could play I must say that I would like the Mechwarriors to have more personality. Or some individual traits that differentiate them. Say one generates a little less heat while jumping, another has a slightly higher range with PPCs. Nothing even as strong as the + equipment.

I am still on my first campaign.  When I found out that the story line was moving the difficulty of all other planets, I stopped doing the story mission.

It just happens that the lowest difficulty planet is 2 out of 5 skulls.  And with half-skull intervals in difficulty, I was able to mod the test file (json) to make up to 10 contracts per star system that ranges from 0.5 to 3.5 skulls.
There are 4+ skull difficulties, but they seem to be reputation level locked.

Anyway, I've travelled to the western-most planet and back doing missions, and over 100 hours already.  My heaviest mech are Orions.

I've enjoyed doing 0.5 to 1 skull missions using 3 medium + 1 light mech for a long time.
Then was running 1 heavy + 3 mediums (or 2 med + 1 light) around 1 to 1.5 skulls contracts.

So as I get new heavies, I've played each for a while learning how to use them.  Dragon, then Blacknight, then Jagermech.

For 1.5 to 2.0 skulls, I use 2 mediums and 2 heavy as I became more comfortable how much punishment they can handle and dishout.

Also, during these times, my roster skill needs favor 2 types, so I recruit to fill alternate roles.
And then there is this cool +xp per day, so I hired recruits but do not assign them skill until they have around 34k+ exp to spend.

2.0 to 2.5 I use 3 heavies and 1 medium.

At 3.0 skulls, the 3 heavies and 1 medium are near death's door when multiple heavies with supporting LRMS and PPCS shoot out of vision range.

I have yet to get my first assault mech.

And the ++ weapons are rare enough that it's a delight to find them without tweaking the json for more to drop.

Now I am tempted to progress the mission to get into 1 Assault mech and do 3.0 skulls contract.
But I want at the same time I want to travel to the east end of the map.

Yeah I do feel that there was a missed opportunity to utilize the Background traits.

Holy shit I got 59 hours in already. I only liberated Panzyr. That says a lot about the game, both good and bad, I guess. I've spent a lot of time playing their game, not their story. Having read the abridged history on that sarna wiki and introducing myself to the series for the first time, I can see a lot of potential for this game's future. Hopefully they adopt Paradox's lengthy post-release support period of forever. I'd rather get a new time period in $20 DLC than in a $40 sequel, but I can understand there are business reasons not to. At least they do have plans for this game, though.

I just finished the main campaign and I very much enjoyed the game. I feel like they have a solid core game and I look forward to see what could come in the future. It reminds me a bit of the first Shadowrun, where the game was good, but the campaign was nothing special, just good enough to provide a frame to let the gameplay shine through.

I do hope they find a way to make lighter mechs worth bringing, some chassis stayed useful for a while (Hunchback 4P and the Catapult come to mind), but in the end I was just running an all assault squad because when you're constantly outnumbered you're not going to avoid damage long enough to take down your enemies. It just always seemed better to bring more armour and bigger guns. I also wasn't a huge fan of the stability mechanic, battlemechs just seem way too easy to knock over. It didn't bother me much until late game though. There were missions that had two enemy lances within LRM range that could sensor lock a 100t mech and knock it down before it even had a chance to move. Of course the opposite was true, I could easily isolate an enemy, knock them down and core them before they had a chance to do much.

By the way, I'm not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread, but if you're experiencing slow downs that weren't there when you started your campaign you should delete (or back up elsewhere) most of your save files. I did it 3-4 times during my campaign and it made a huge difference. I've also read that if you are experiencing slow downs in the mech bay selling some of your excess inventory might help (but only unique entries on the item list matter, so if you just sell some of your stack of MLASERS it won't do anything).

I definitely recommend you just go get that assault mech. Doing higher skull missions keeps the game interesting and getting the biggest mechs gives you some interesting loadout options. I'm at the point where most missions are 3-4 skulls, (I didn't really stop to smell the roses until I was well financially stable and story missions pay so much that I took one every time I was on the ropes) and I still want to advance the story a little so I can find more assault mechs.

Right now my best LRM carrier is still a Centurion with 3 LRM15's. I want to find something better since you'd think my best one wouldn't be a medium at this point. I figured out I could pack 4 onto a Jagermech but currently my only Jagermech with missile hardpoints is being used as a brawler with loads of SRMs still. The Catapult was surprisingly disappointing for being one of my favorite mechs in other games, after packing 2 LRM20's it still has less firepower than my Centurion and that's at a tonnage deficit too, I never even bother seeing exactly how little armor I would have on one once I added ammo. I really wish I could make my SRM+Flamer catapult from MW4.

Also regarding background traits, the way they're written in the game I'm almost certain they were originally planned to be a more involved feature than they are. It seems like they made the framework for it and had to cut it before release. There's some other story stuff that feels this way too, the people you can talk to on the ship are a real step down from Shadowrun's party members where you could earn respect with all of them and slowly reveal their backstory. Outside of the random events you get when travelling, I also don't think there's a single dialogue option that has any consequence, anywhere. I'm not at the end yet but we can assume from the framing device at the start of the game (which doesn't really add anything) that you don't get the option to betray Lady Arano at the end of the game for a bunch of money or something, which feels like the sort of decision that you'd expect from a story where you're a mercenary instead of just a soldier.

the only thing that deleting saves does is reducing the interface hickup when opening the loading screen.
any other improvement comes from restarting the game. if you just tab out and delete the games, the loading screen will speed up but nothing else.  if you restart the game but not delete saves everything will speed up a little (for a while).

For my i5 cpu, 8GB ram, and GTX 770 vid, I think after 7 missions, the 8th slows down in loading.
I only have google docs and twitch playing on the 2nd monitor.
And computer restart is fairly fast, and keeps me sane.

So hmm, 3x LRM-15 on a Cent sound good.  But I like at least 2 JJ to help move on hills.
I might consider Jagermech missile boat when I get a Tac 8, and fighting vs heavies.

The next SL mission suggest I bring long range at 2 skulls.
So yeah, I'll do that next, then travel to the east-end of the universe.
