Especially considering that the mechs in question only barely resemble the ones that Harmony Gold has distribution rights to. They're pure patent trolls as far as I'm concerned. Have been for a long time.

The best part is them trying to claim that the Atlas and Shadow Hawk look too much like the mecha that the fuckin' Archer derived from.

I guess they didn't have enough fun getting dick-slapped by Hasbro.

They're probably just still salty over how bad the Robotech reboot kickstarter failed (remember the pissy "give $2 to bitch about us in the comments" backer tier?)

I've heard a lot of the movie industry dodged the project, because they are so lawsuit happy.

Makes sense. I really wish someone would just buy the rights from them or something so that Robotech could get some proper love in the states. From what I've heard there is some new stuff out in Japan that we just haven't gotten because the Japanese company that *actually* owns all this stuff doesn't want to deal with them anymore.

Yeah, the thing is, Japanese courts have already ruled that HG don't actually have the rights to any of the Macross content they're squatting on. It's just that nobody wants to spend the time and money toppling them for good.

Yeah, the thing is, Japanese courts have already ruled that HG don't actually have the rights to any of the Macross content they're squatting on. It's just that nobody wants to spend the time and money toppling them for good.

Which is very common.

For example one lady went on a tirade and claimed the music from River City Ransom and has absolutely no claim or reasonable way to believe she has a claim. Yet because of how the Copyright provisions in the USA works (Guilty until proven innocent) it became a LOT less costly to recreate ALL the music for the entire game then it was to take this person to court for their spurious actions.

Or we can take the "Happy Birthday Song" which every single lawyer in the USA might have told you that they do not own, and couldn't own, but in order to actually use it you would have to go through a long drawn out court battle. Which eventually did happen from a company whose ENTIRE shtick is to sue people for being copyright trolls (As in, not even a company that wanted to use the song)... but goodness was that copyright held for a LONG time (and even now... you are still likely to be sued for copyright for using that song)

Bah. I hope that the HG patent trolls don't delay or kill the game. It's a shame that copyright law in the US is such a mess, but that's a separate rant that doesn't involve big stompy robots shooting each other to pieces.

I highly doubt they can kill the game over this, but delay it? Its gonna get delayed for sure.

There are only a few Mechs that are in HG's crosshairs. Mechs like the Marauder, Warhammer and Archer. I believe the Marauder was one of the first Mechs finished (see the pre-alpha combat video), but it isn't in the backer beta. I feel that as long as HBS doesn't include the disputed Mechs, the game can be finished and released. My two C-Bills ...

A good question for the next Q&A in any case.

The HBS Marauder in the video looked liked a Locust though. And the Archer is not confirmed for the game, iirc, which is probably why they just took the mecha the Archer was derived from and put the Shadow Hawk next to it. Because fuck it, all 2 legged fighting machines look the same anyway, right?

Here is hoping that the case goes the same way as when harmony gold tried to sue hasbro over some gi joe toys.

So I looked through the court document, they are literally trying to sue every company that is not microsoft that has made anything related to mechwarrior battletech.

Heh. The Atlas isn't copied from the Armored Valkyrie. The Crusader was copied from the Valk.
