A new Kickstarter update.

Closed (Kickstarter Beta) to kick-off somewhere between late January and early March. Beta will not contain all content, but will have multiplayer. Beta players can share footage and discuss the builds freely.

The update has some story info on your NPC crew and the main protagonists / antagonists. Mild spoilers, so beware!

Apparantly, they (along with the folks from MechWarrior Online) have gotten a merchandise deal. The next update at the end of the year will give more info.

This is great stuff. Unfortunately, there appears to be a storm brewing with people angry over representation.

What kind of representation woes?

just had a quick glance at the comments. Looks like a few people (doubt it's a big portion) are very upset at the small number (or lack?) of white characters revealed in the 'cast of characters'.
Not sure why it's a big deal, but I guess some people are going to be unhappy unless they get to be white... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

White isn't a unquestioned majority in the Battletech universe O_o like it is in ALL settings (even ones that really shouldn't be).

But lets see the factions involved... I'll be back

Can't we just ignore these "politically correct" people? There's almost no reason to give them any attention whatsoever. In fact, actually giving them attention when it comes to such minor issues just makes things worse for everyone.

Except for the time where people complaining about Tracer's butt pose made her butt pose even better.

Wait seriously? Dumb fucks. Where are they, I feel like yelling at idiots.

Probably just ideological reactionaries who think Battletech is a brand of energy drink. Of all the contexts for a racial-melange cast of characters, a small-time BT merc unit is one of the most reasonable.

I hope this means I can go back to being pissed off at right-wing bigots for a good while, but knowing SJWs it'll probably be days at most before there's whining about there being four whole white characters in the main cast.  ::)

uhh the people asking for white characters ARE the SJW :P

Captain Planet racial diversity and all that.

The important thing to remember is that chances are... they are just trolls trying to annoy people while using the guise of "Social progressivism" as a cover.

In otherwords ignore them. We heard their argument and we went "nope" and thus it is over.

Actually, no. Flying Dice can feel relieved because these are definitely right wing people who are angry about the diversity on show in the cast. So not to worry, it's still a pretty easy distinction.

Id argue but that would be giving these guys more face time then they deserve.

I do hope we get a lot of Urban Combat. Jump jets are useful, but they REALLY shine in that environment.

I also hope they fix up cover mechanics because... Well... no offense to Battletech but cover often feels like it is MORE risky to use, rather than less (due to increasing your chance of a critical drastically AND removing your legs as a target... all for a negligible aim penalty to the enemy)

I think what I'd do to fix cover rules is that "Rerolls cannot critical" so you cannot headshot or internal body shot with a rerolled location with cover unless it is a missing part.

I can't recall if they've mentioned it, but from the pre-alpha demo it vaguely looks like they're using a system akin to the original X-Com, where weapons fire is distributed independent of any "cover" or "defense" number -- if a shot's trajectory causes it to collide with terrain or a prop, it hits that instead of the target 'mech, and if a 'mech is totally occluded by terrain/props it's not visible to target at all. Possibly combined with a soft sort of cover system akin to TT for stuff like being in a dense forest or whatever.

If that's true, it's a non-concern: a SRM6 won't suddenly have all six missiles in a tight spread across the head, CT, and RT + Right Arm just because everything else is behind a hill, they'll still spread normally but some will hit terrain where they would otherwise have hit, say, the legs or the LT. It'd fit the mold of what they did with Shadowrun, where they tried to stay in line with tabletop but didn't force stuff that doesn't work well or doesn't translate to PC gaming. Like with the initiative system in this one, that was a good call and looks decently balanced.

Backer update today. Looks like they're going to do a good job making melee both useful and satisfying!

I'm in the minority as a melee hater? I always thought it be too anime and eat away suspension of disbelief. Especially when it was so much better (regarding melee weapons, not fists) than most ranged weapons to make it viable mechanics-wise.

"too anime" when the most critical part of melee is knocking 'mechs down because they can't stand back up easily? When DFA is all about making use of the laws of physics that 'mechs do decide to conform to as a weapon? Fucking LAMs are too anime and people drool over them. It ain't like you've got your Atlas pulling out a beamsaber or some shit.
