Just had my first fun time.
« on: January 19, 2008, 08:26:00 pm »

I've always been a bit of a fickle player always willing to abandon a fortress for the slightest reason but I've just managed to get my first catastrophic failure.

I found a nice site with just about everything short of a magma vent. It has HIDDEN FUN STUFF though so I can use magma eventually. I started the map to find that most of my map was a single windswept plain of limestone just waiting to have a huge fort built up on top of it. I built a channel around the entire map and put a guarded bridge over it. My dwarves prospered and soon the fort reached a population of 124. The goblins sieged and half of them were killed or captured by the traps at my entrance and the rest just milled about unable to find their way into my fort since my entrance drawbridge was up.

Unfortunately the goblins proved fatal without ever meeting my dwarves in combat. They distracted me long enough that I didn't notice that I was out of usable food. I set my cooks to make roasts out of the 500 or so units of tallow that were sitting around, but it was too late. Half my dwarves were hunting vermin. Since there were something like six pet cats in the fortress the vermin hunting was a death sentence.

Dwarves started dropping like flies and everyone quickly went insane. I dropped the drawbridge to let the invaders finish things off quickly only to have almost the entire population of tantruming dwarves pour out onto the plain along with the dwarven merchant caravan who I had trapped inside when the siege started.

Half the remaining goblins succumbed to the merchant guards and desperate wrestling peasants before the siege lifted, and the surviving goblins fled.

My fortress was a stinking charnel filled with maddened screams of the murdering and weeping. Then the world broke, the game crashed, and when I brought it back up it was like it was all a dream.

Congratulations! I have yet to achieve such epic disaster, being a fickle player myself. My current fortress holds much hope, however. The worst that has happened was a botched central staircase project (0 casualties). My dwarves may yet live to die another day!  :D

I just wish that the dwarves would start passing out from hunger near the end and when they did they would look for other food when they woke up. Or it would activate the health care labor for some other dwarf to take them to bed.

Since I only play Ironman style (glitches excepted), I figure something like this'll happen sooner or later.

I once lost about 50 of my 65 dwarves to thirst and domestic violence.  Those that somehow survived eventually buried the dead and carried on.  The population rose again with the next immigrant wave.

What's iron man style play?

From the description, ironman means no reverting to previous saves under any conditions except outright bugs (e.g. u-bend).  Personally, I tend to only savescum when testing out something I've never tried before just to see how the mechanics operates, and just before opening floodgates when installing new water systems (as I have a terrible tendency to do things like forget to close *other* floodgates or leave gaps I didn't see before, etc.).  Otherwise, I'm actually looking *forward* to losing my first fort due to insanity and murder.

It's probably the same thing as playing a game in "hardcode mode", where dying means your save is deleted and you start your character over from scratch (ala Angband and Diablo II's hardcore mode).

Alternatively, it could mean playing DF to an infinite Black Sabbath loop and seeing how long you can prevent your dwarves from going insane and tantruming over it.

In a completely unrelated note, though still with regards to Lord Licorice, I forgot /tg/ even existed. Looking at it, all the threads are as on topic* as most of the other small boards.

* Filled with rule-breaking porn

Back on topic, I'm still awaiting the mass riots that inevitably stem from a handle of deaths during a goblin siege. Not that it isn't amusing, but is Toady ever going to fix that? The whole endless cycle of someone dying and the chaos growing exponentially bigger as more die in the ensuing riots?

That being said, I should probably think of something witty to put here.

You only save as you are quiting, you only load when you are starting, and you don't do any save-copying or savescumming. In other words, no-turning-back-if-you-FLOOD-EVERYONE-mode. Which I've done quite a few times.

Scorpios:

1) I did indeed just lose the game.
2)

Only if I'm very bored.

EDIT: Syntax fix

Hey, some of the threads are on topic; I've got proof! Sure, I had to build an archival site just to collect this proof, but proof I have!

I lost it a few minutes ago thanks to an image on /tg/, a board I never would have been on if it weren't for Lord Licorice.
I've never even played a game that would qualify me for /tg/ membership  :(
