What pays dwarves?

Do dwarves get paid to haul stuff around once the economy kicks in or mus they actually make/plant/process/pull something?

I'm rather certain they get paid at least a few coins for about every job they can do. That includes even such as hauling and pulling levers.

Once the economy is up you can see these values in the 'Z' status menu under Prices. Fairly sure thats where I've seen it anyway.

Dwarves do get paid for pulling levers, at $5 a pop. If you set up a workshop profile for that lever and have it have a repeating Pull job, then the dwarf will just stand there, pulling the lever and making money. Sounds like my job.

The wages menus is under the jobs manager menu, (j) - (m) - (w) to get to it. you can't, unfortunately, change them but the mayor(?) sometimes will.

Take notice that hauling pays almost nothing  ($1 per item by default) which is why most of your dwarves in larger games are dirt poor.

Without a ridiculous amount of micromanagement, it's pretty much impossible to keep your mundane dwarves able to afford even the most meager bedroom.  And if you feed your fortress with cooked food like I do, your cooks' meals are going to get more and more expensive as they get to be better cooks, which ends up driving your peasants into inescapable debt after about two lunches.

Economy needs fixing.

There really should be varying prices for whats in the fort. If there's 500 legendary meals and nothing else to eat the price should go down. The price should also go up if there is less food. If there isn't enough food in the fort to feed all the dwarves then they should charge exorbant prices for food. Same should apply to everything.

...

Ah well I guess it's on the list already, most stuff is.

There already are varying prices. It sends you messages when nobles change the prices around. There's just a limit on how drastically prices are allowed to vary - i think its 50% to 200%

Firstly dwarves don't really need bedrooms - other then putting the smiths by the forges (only because they tend to be really far from the rest of your fortress) it doesn't matter if they all sleep in a barracks (and they will sleep in the barracks for free). They get an unhappy thought, but as long as the barracks is nice (plop a nice statue or something, or double detail it) and they actually have a bed it's pretty minor and ignorable.

As for food - dwarves don't have to pay for food, ever. no matter how good the meal it's free so no-one will starve. the only thing they have to pay for is a room and stuff from shops (which includes clothes).

Yeah, a barracks will work, but bedrooms are often thematically appropriate, as well as being a handy place for storage containers, without building separate storage rooms assigned from a statue or something.

Even the poorest dwarf is allowed to eat food, but I'm fairly sure that it's cost is still decreased from his available funds, which often makes him incapable of affording anything.

Only if you have them waste lots of time on hauling tasks, which I dislike doing even without the economy running. I have as many legendaries as possible doing the hauling (since they don't need money anyhow) while the mundanes slave away on repeat workshop jobs until they hit legendary. Just think of it as semi-retirement for veteran craftsdwarves.

The real question is, who pays the dwarves?

The wiki claims that Dwarven Economy is a capitalist model. That's quite incorrect. An economic system where wages are set by a non-laboring elite, all workers are assigned jobs by the government and are paid by the government, and everyone is subject to conscription at any time would more accurately be described as Soviet-style communism. Alternatively, if you look at all of the workshops as being independently owned but directed by the government (or in coordination with the government), the economic system would be well described as National Socialist.

Since I sort of doubt that our dwarves are commies or Nazis, maybe the economy model needs further refinement on a theoretical level.

Most non-hauling jobs pay a decent wage, and since I stopped using dedicated haulers it seems to work out quite nicely with minimal effort.

Actually, I have always viewed Dwarves as a race that can actually pull off a working Communistic society. So, that would not be too far of a stretch, however, the way it works right now is that a ruling elite(nobles) set everything for the lower dwarves, with the legendaries being an odd exception. That would make this more of a Feudal system, right?
