Are those dwarves that stupid?

Really , they are annoying.

They just keep hauling items when they have better things to do.

Also i have tons of plump helmets and it says it needs 5 unrotten drink mat plants.

FUCKING DWARVES.

The plump helmets are inaccessible because they are in transit (or stored in barrels, in which case the plump helmets are "inaccessible" every time another dorf attempts to put something into the barrel or remove something from it, as well as a significant period before the dorf reaches the container, which is extra fun with "mix food").
Don't store still/thresher/... input goods in barrels...

I thought Toady added the code to intercept the barrel in transit?

They changed the way barrels and bins work so that the bin/barrel is not hauled to the item and then hauled back. Now a bin is marked as being used by a dwarf when they are moving the item to store it in the barrel. It still can cause problems with jobs however so its best to setup a manager job so it kicks off when the items are available. There are also some bugs with bins where they never allow jobs to process correctly.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Dwarves are indeed stupid.

You can force stop a dwarf from hauling by going to the units list 'u', highlighting the offending dwarves, and remove worker 'x'. This will make them drop the items and do something else (likely another hauling job, which is why Anonymax's method is probably better.).

EDIT: Forgot to write, but I think when dwarves say they need DRINK_MAT plants they might also have run out of food storage to put it in.

It's like the eccentric scientist types in bad movies. "We cannot save ze world with my Matter Inversion Ray because they knocked out the power to the lab!"
Buff mechanic dude spends have the movie scrounging parts and fighting off Things That Go Bump in the Night to restore power.
"Ah, and I zent out all the lenses to Switzerland to have zem cleaned."

Short answer : YES, they are that stupid.

Long answer : Their stupidity has no known bounds!
They appear to have an etherial link binding them to all our games, in some sort of communal race to see wich dwarf can do the stupidest act, at the precise moment to briefly hold the title of stupidest dwarf!! Until another supplants it, in someone else's game.

Theese boards are filled with their tales of stupidity, and occasionally ours.

Yes, they are that stupid.

More precisely, their AI is very inadequate comparing to what DF world has to offer (or more likely to threaten them).
