Needing help for making a village [GAVE UP]
« on: September 23, 2015, 08:35:49 am »

Hi there!

I need a sort of to-do list.
For now i got a little building where the dwarves go when they are idling , and theres the food in it.That is the tavern.
Im currently doing the building for needed workshops : still, carpentry and fishery.I already built them , but need to do the building.
So , here what i think i need:
-A dormitory(because ill make homes only for who needs it)
-Bigger tavern
-More workshops
-Maybe dig , but aquifer
thats all.
So tell me what i need more.

Edit:Gave up.

More workshop buildings, of course. You'll need clothing, so you need a textile plant. You'll need a military even more if you're a surface village. So you need a barracks and a smithy. I'd only put married couples in housing. Otherwise dorms. Honestly, make the dorm a part of the tavern and give actual houses with bedrooms and dining rooms and pantries to the families so they can bond. And don't forget the hospital. You can use the aquifer to feed the well-system.

I really need more dwarves , seriously , i hope migrants will come a day.

I've done similar things.
Individual house / workshop are 4x4 inside, enough room for a 3x3, and up/down stairs.
The workshop is on the z+0 level (surface) with a front door, and a side/back door.  And has room for choice material stockpile.
Front door leads to a 2-wide side road, or 3-wide main road.
The side/back door leads to a private yard or resource stockpile.
The bedrooms are on the z+1; with +bed for unmarried kids; chest/coffer, table+chair;  and roofed.

The basement can have finished goods or furniture supplies.

Some houses are bigger with 2, 3 or 4 workshops.

So a 1 workshop has a 4x4 room flooring.
A 2 workshop is 4x7 room flooring.
A 3 or 4 workshop has a 7x7 room flooring.

Something fell down. It happens.

This looks like a pretty nice, indepth, non-hurried project. Keep playing and a few nice DF stories will emerge, I'm sure! It's nice to see someone spending time on the details... I know I should more! Keep up Armok's work!

Also, have you considered palisade/wall or other for defence? It's a bit unoriginal, so I think just having a strong military and maybe siege engines on roofs or something would be better, make it more interesting and aesthetic. Your choice, though I'd recommend not having a strong wall.

You can do a moat with a fixed bridge. That will allow you to plan some defenses without locking yourself down.

(I've started avoiding anything more than locked doors to keep bad guys out, but it's really frustrating if a troll enters somewhere unnoticed and there is so much cancellation spam that you miss the announcements until you notice that half the fortress is demolished. I wish there was a better announcement / alert system, is it possible to trigger a center+message whenever a hostile enters a designated burrow?)

@NJW2000: A siege engine at a different elevation than the target is useless for other purposes than decoration, since the can hit targets at their own elevation only. They can't fire over obstacles either, but CAN fire through fortifications from any distance.

@vanatteveldt: ...\data\init\announcements.txt can be modified to change how announcements are handled. I generally remove the pause+center on a bunch of messages that are just annoying (caught by a mood, birth, animal training decay, named weapon/shield,...). It's possible to modify other messages to be pause+center by copying the pattern from those that are. You can't add new triggers/messages, though, as far as I understand. That would probably require a DFHack script or similar.

Multiple Z-levels? Yeah, forgot the z-lvl thing. Depends on the map, I guess.

You could have fake houses with siege engines in them :)

I love this idea, build a zigzag path with deep (optionally flooded) pits, and a row of fake houses whose front doors are all linked to one lever.
Pull lever, doors open, operators open fire.

Siege engines in one, soldiers in another, an FB in the third, magma in the fourth, crocsplosion in the fifth... you wouldn't need levers, they'll beat the doors down themselves too, I think  :P

I'd skip the doors for the siege engine and use fortifications instead. I'd also make a 15 tile long tunnel in front of the siege engine and and it with the fortification. That way the siege operator won't be scared by the critters the engine is firing at, and can't be hit by missiles (etc) from them. Note that the number 15 is uncertain. I suggested a sight range of about 12 in another thread, and someone else said it's probably more like 15.
The siege engine operator would enter the "house" from beneath.
