It's Armok's way of saying you need a moat with a retractable bridge. And traps. A lot of traps. I prefer cage traps for entertaining arena fights. At the moment, I have ten trapped goblins in my animal stockpile. All I now need are some animals to train and release. But if you choose this approach, don't forget to disarm those nasty gobbo's or they'll hurt your poor war cougar.

Moats and traps protect you, yes, but they're all so boring. What fun is it if your enemies physically can't get close to you?

Work on your soldiers' shield skills and they'll have better odds against arrows.

On the upside, one of my casualties was my mayor.

Yay, I can trade bracelets again!

That's where the arena comes in handy: should the kill your war elephant, you can always send in a wrestler or whatever. Surely, it's an unfair fight, but that is when the random placed floor hatches and evenly randomly placed and connected pressure plates make the fight more even. whoever falls, is eliminated. Not necessarily dead, but that can be arranged by flooding the holding chamber, placing spikes on the landing spot or making it an ever changing maze with bridges, weapon, stone-fall or cage traps, upright spikes, pressure plates and a floodgate linked to a lever to provide a quick escape for your military dwarves. And of course an exit to the outer world, outside of your outer walls.
