Upon his scouts return Marrow decides that he must learn more of these men before sending an diplomat. Marrow sends his sneakiest three crocomen, dark of color, light of foot, and smaller in stature, to observe the ways of these men. The rest of the tribe is tasked with the creation of stone plows for the fields and weapons in case the men are hostile.

With the return of the scouts, and Marrow deciding to send out three more apt individuals, they set off. As the sun continued to rise the three Crocomen would-be spies made it back to the settlement without event11. They were able to approach from the same direction that the scouts advised, ending up on very the ridge9.

After a short time however, the sunrise cut their large, distinct silhouette against the ridge that these people would be very familiar with and the village bell were struck1. A handful of men in poor peasantry arms of bent hunting bows, sickles, scythes and pitchforks stood guard on the road, watching, waiting.

The Madrea smiles as she shoos the children off, softness of expression betraying the annoyance in her voice. She did want some peace though, as they worked eastward. Her feet were sore from walking, but all of their feet were. No use complaining about it. Some of the women had seen horses in the plains, and their husbands had requested the privilege of trying to fetch them. It would take a few days, that was true. But they had the food for it, at the moment, and new animals would be welcome. She decided to let them, and called over her niece, Juniea, to let them know. Around an hour later, as they began making camp, the hunting parties set out led by their huntmistresses, and the baskets of food were sorted and counted, those men would set out. Hopefuly they would bring back horses from the expedition, and perhaps even some meat as well.

The Mother had told her, in the winds and the stones and the flames, that the east was bountiful. Here, it was good, but they could not sustain themselves here. Not easily. The ground could not be tamed well, and the rivers, while full, were few, though they followed one now. The Madrea settled down at one of the fires, fed by the fallen and dead branches of the few trees they'd come across in their journey this day, and the droppings of the beasts they led and the beasts they followed. She relaxed as she sat, watching the sun set, and began to pray, humming softly as some of the clanswomen began to drum. She asked the Mother for her portents, that night. The moon would be full; it was usually the best time to ask. What would she read in the stars, what wisdom dripped from the fire, or the swirls of smoke above it? She was the only one who could tell, and even she felt as though she scarcely knew what she was doing to Listen to their goddess, half the time. Ah well. It was a good night, and the Mother's people were, for the moment, warm and full through the night. With Her guidance, that would last.

That night, during the ritual, smokey visions and fiery images came to and fro as per usual. Images came and went, formless and shapeless. The Mother did not speak to the Mandrea this night.6.

However that morning, fortune favored as some of the men of the tribe brought back a number of tamed horses on reigns of rope.18

For all that represents the gnomish people, we must preserve this land, we must prosper and give to the world once it had given to us.
Greinol looked upon the beautiful area and merely knelt, the other gnomes had then followed suit. Greinol had then after reciting a personal prayer, had stood up again and directed his brethren and fellow gnomes.

"Brethren! We must establish sanctuary, to create a land for which it would prosper for a great many of generations! Make your homes, create you shrines, and bless the land! We must ward what is now our home from our enemies! For what is haunting our peoples are the darkness that threatens us all, hobble and strike together! For what is here shall become the pillars of what we are, for it is home. This is out only land, the one's before us! We shall not compromise with the strides away from what we fear! We stand here and construct! So I must ask, give all your body to what you work for, and all your mind for your faith, for we must unite all the life that we shall live among, and please the great spirits that we strive for! This is a new age for us, and it shall be for the world around us!"

Have about 23 gnomes set to the task of constructing homes, whether it be installed into trees, built into hills, or built up with wood and plant matter. Have the remaining 10 gnomes search for food, scout the area whilst doing so, and attempt to befriend the local wildlife.

((You don't need to really go into this much detail on the figures unless you wanted to for the sake of it, I'm trying to throw figures out of the window  :P)).

On returning, the gnomes have brought back a large bounty of mushrooms and crabapples, baskets of berries and even a rabbit - blessed as it was slain of course20. +85 Food.

The Tasngar regarded the surroundings with curiosity. The area was peaceful, sure, and the people have had enough of nomadism. In their case it would be considered astute to survey the surroundings before trying to settle down, at the very least to find a good settlement sites. Along with that, more food would be necessary, even in an oversupply.

First, a part of Tasngar scouts the local area, looking primarily for good settlement spots but otherwise the tribe had good knowledge of their surroundings.

Secondly, A party of hunters and foragers set off to look for food for the tribe, to ensure it has more than enough to eat.

It did not take long for the nomads of Tasngar to find a suitable spot; a river slithered across a grassland of shallow, rolling hills, topped and cropped with thick, sturdy wood. The sides opened uphill and downhill, stretching into deep woodlands.19

The gatherer-hunters eventually caught up, bringing a modest discovery of bushmeat and edible roots and berries10. +32 Food.

(I'm going to eventually post/update player stats in the OOC thread).

((Aw yes. Hardwoods, a reasonably defensible position and lots of fertile land. It doesn't come much better than this.))

The Tasngar start preparing the site they found in earnest for their own settlement efforts, starting to construct enough dwellings for the community along with a storehouse for the food.

With appreciation for the great and adventurous gnomes who set out and collected the foodstuffs for the Aquelign in it's entirety, Greinol had then given the foragers some time to rest.

"Thanks to our brave foragers we shall have no worries of starvation as we feast below the rising moon! But there is still much work to do! To create homes and establish ourselves with this land. To speak with creatures of the grandest roars and the slightest movements, from the smallest worm to the greatest beast! We have spent much of our food in the winter, so we must work til' we would be able to gorge ourselves, and to give back to this land! We work and feast, and bless the land!"

Continue the construction of homes, and set out the now some-what experienced foragers to set out farther and scavenge for more foodstuffs to add to the supply

The men had returned early. A blessing, then, from the Mother; She must have been busy with them. It would explain why She had not spoken to Asterre the previous evening. They continued to move, always eastward, as much as they could while following the river, anyway. Many of the women and children ran ahead to fish, and the men and women alike gathered what berries and grains they could from the river banks. The trees were growing more plentiful the farther east they walked, and one of the women had asked permission from the Mother to cut a tree down. It was not their way. The woman knew that. Until they found the land of their people, they would not leave scars upon the earth. The fallen branches and droppings of the animals would be enough for the their fires. They always had been before. It was not winter, after all.

The hunting parties would return in a day or two; Mother bless, they would return with some success. Their horses were still few, and while the more experienced women were teaching the horses how to accept and bear a rider, getting them used to the basic saddles they used, they would not be ready for hunting for some time. Still, tame though they might be, teaching them to be useful might be another matter. It would happen, for most, but how long it took...

That night, at the fires, a child asked Madrea Bedeos to tell them a story, apparently on behalf of the whole lot of kids. It was the daughter of their best woodcarver, Phiala, who had made the Madrea's walking staff. Sighing contentedly, the Madrea told the child, whose name was Joujio(she had not yet received her Bleeding Name), to bring the others around, as she began.

"Have you heard the story of the First Couple and the Seven Fanged Snake?" They had, of course. Many times before. But they all shook their heads eagerly nonetheless. "Well then! I'll have to speak with your fathers about that, now won't I?" the Madrea asked, a sly smile dancing on her lips.

"Ah well...I suppose I'll have to tell you myself. You see, it is an important story. The Mother was resting after having made the first Man, as she did with every gift, and the First Woman and the First Man were wandering through the lands they called home then, free of the darkness that would come later, with the Mother's frailty, as creatures sought to destroy the marvels she had wrought..."

The Istanians would see how far east they could get, where the Mother would lead them. The Madrea had resolved to listen for Her guidance again that night, once many of the others were asleep; they would have tried to prevent her, saying that she would strain herself. They might be right. But to be witness to Her was worth it. The auguries must be made.

The young women had been growing anxious, though. The nurses were caring for their children, and they had little to do on the journey. Asterre had told them to go scouting, if it would get them out of the way. A surprising number had taken her up on the offer. They were going to head out in the morning on those few horses they'd already had tamed, to see who and what was nearby. Perhaps they could find potential converts to the Mother's way.

The tribe was happy. Such a deposit was a very promising sign for the coming year. And while they would love to focus exclusively on their research, they also required some sustenance. Madcursed Mos, as eager as he was to start burning lime, saw this and spoke to his tribe. "The stone is rich in light giving lime, but poor in meats. You, goblins, will look for fish." He pointed to about a third of the tribe, and they went to the lake to fish, and determine whether that was a viable food source.

"We do not know what is in the water, so you goblins will search the land for meat." He pointed at another third of the tribe, and they spread out across the land hunting, and noting wildlife worth hunting.

But, being a goblin, he could not help but put the beginnings of their chemistry into motion. "But are we not the Stonefire tribe?! Without quicklime we have no name! And so you, goblins, will begin to mine and fire lime." This was directed at the last third of the goblins, and this group began gathering clay, if available, for lime kilns. Mos himself led this group, and his thoughts were always on the future. He hoped desperately to get his tribe producing quicklime soon, and perhaps even trading it away for food. Every goblin among them would be happier working the kilns than fishing or hunting.

A grey ratwoman awakens and opens her black eyes to the sight of the interior of a small darken tent. She quietly rolls off her mountain goat mat. She then quietly begins to dress into her sandals, tunic, and robe. Standing, the young ratwoman glumly looks at her three fellow sleeping occupants. Nearest to her is a young hairless ratwoman with child, Thea, her father’s lover and her unofficial stepmother. Next is an older grey colored ratwoman, Lola, her father’s older sister and aunt. Furthest is a light grey ratman, Garsas, son of Lola. Then, the ratwoman left the small tent.

“Chieftess Barsine,” A calming and familiar voice greets. “May you be well today.”

“May you be well too, Pike. Are ratwomen gathering up now?” Barsine replies to the stone gray furred ratman of 78 years. Pike Rockjump was regent and advisor to her grandfather, briefly advisor to her father, and now advisor to her. After living for so long, Pike now relies on a wooden cane and is slow to move, but his mind is still sharp as ever.

“Yes chieftess, they are. Are you ready to address them?” Pike says.

Barsine nods. The sun creeps from the horizon as they head towards the gathering.

Tribesrats of the Snout Clan begin to scavenge and hunt for food. They also travel and survey their surroundings for sources of water and food as well as other points of interest.

Marrow gathers his entire tribe. Those of you who have armor, dawn it. Those you with weapons, draw them. Today we learn whether we will live at peace of if war will follow us to our new home. The crocomen dawn their armor and raise their banners. They march as a group along the main road, the women and children in the center of the group. When they near the human encampment Marrow calls out in common, "I am Marrow, the leader of the last crocomen. We have journeyed from fallen lands far from this place. We are the last survivors of a great war. Today we have come to see if the people of this land still have the fire of war burning in their hearts. We come seeking peace and cooperation, but know too well the love of one's land. May the leader of these men come forth and discuss with me the maters of peace and friendship.

Mos stood on the limestone and looked out across the region, and he was happy. Quickly the goblins gathered the resources for a fire, and his 66 tribesgoblins gathered around. Mos spoke in a loud and clear voice, the kind of voice most outsiders assumed goblins couldn't make. He spoke to them of the first goblins. "In the beginning the world was dark with confusion and fear. Man thought he understood fire, but he still rubbed flint and steel together. They may have discovered it, but we perfected it." With this he bit a small vial between his teeth and threw it into the fire as it flared up. In a matter of seconds the wood was burning high.

"We do not know about when or where goblins first appeared, but we know much of the first true goblins. The Broken Stone tribe had a simple idea, that what we observed consisted of smaller parts that were different than the whole. What would become the Spirits of Gold tribe looked at these smaller parts as principles that could be liberated from their substance, founding alchemy. The Blood Leaf tribe found these smaller parts could have positive effects on bodies, founding medicine. And our great ancestors, the Broken Metals tribe, saw that there were common constituents of the world which could be separated from the whole, founding chemistry. But their division is a story for different time, tonight is about the founding of great things, not their dissolution.

The Broken Stone tribe was larger than the tribes you see today, and they built a true and beautiful city. Their buildings were of the purest stone and brick, etched into fanciful images using acids and coated with gold pounded thinner than a fingernail. Glass blown into incredible and tenuous shapes were rendered harder than steel by processes lost decades ago. Food was kept cold without ice and heated without fire. And the lights. The lights were truly things of beauty. The purest white light shown from chemical containers at a moment's command.

Many of these secrets have been lost to time, but by the end of this year, even if we have nothing more than hovels to live in and scraps to eat, bright white light will pour from our tribe."

The goblins began to search out and collect fuel (coal, then wood if necessary) and structural materials (clay, then hard stone if necessary).

With the gnomish peoples bustling and working around the area, and the air full of sweet aromas of foraged fruits and with a slight hint of some sort of roasted meat somewhere in the tribes claimed land. Greinol had been happy that the gnomish people had been somewhat successful in their endeavors, even if the village seemed to look more of a camp with a few slightly permanent fixtures, it perhaps could be a bustling and thriving town. However, more grim situations remain, the issue of the evil spirits, for the name of nature and all benevolent spirits, a shrine, a place of worship, of blessings and mysticism was to be built. To test the faith in the gnomish peoples would be to give them something that they must call for the ancestors of their ancestors to support them.

"Brethren and sisters! Women and Men, all of Aquelign! We have marched thousands of steps here, nay, more than a thousand steps to reach this land! We have vowed to protect it, we had took from it, and now we must rest our faith and love to it! Where we need the blessings of great divines, nature, and all that could represent the ancestors of our peoples, fae and spirits, the very creatures of mysticism and magic! I declare the construction of a shrine, a place of worship and sacrifice to please the spirits and the land. And only then we may have peace from evil!"

Dedicate a large portion of gnomes to building a shrine dedicated to nature and benevolent spirits, while having the rest of the gnomes secure the settlement, hold a large prayer at evening and or night to give our blessings and hold fires to attempt to please local spirits

The traditional role of females in the Snout Clan has always been the guardian of the home. Cooking, tending to the gardens, rearing the children, maintaining the home, and weaving were the most common jobs that ratwomen undertook. Now, the very few who were taught the art of hunting lead their bands to in search of food in the unknown wilds. As the sun was setting, Jova’s band brought the bodies of two wild boars, Dargos’ returned with many infant tubers, Song’s found leaves of edible bushes, and Chieftess Barsine’s killed large wild ox. Although the only water the Clan was able to find was in sparse small pools, the thirst was quenched with milk of their nanny goats.

Sweat rolls down my grey face. I sit alone staring into the tiny dying fire at my feet. I have just finished drilling with my bronze spear, imagining each stab and jab I threw into the air was actually into and impaling Bond Chief Jorgos. From behind and out of the night’s darkness, Thea comes and sits next to me.

Thea was one of the bondsmen and women sent by Bond Chief Jorgos to appease my disgruntle father. Although my father took great offense to the idea of slaves being to his village, he nevertheless accepted the slaves so they would have more hospitable lives. In a year’s time, Thea and my father unexpectedly fell in love.

“How are you doing Bar?” Thea asks with a fairly large smile.

“Fine, the forging and hunting went well. Everyone’s a pretty fast learner.” I reply. “How are things at camp?”

“The kids were goods, the goats grazed, and the milking them was ease.” Thea says.

We both pause and look at the flickering embers of a once big cooking fire.

“So you’re pregnant with my half-sibling, eh?” I comment.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m reminded of that all the time.” She says with an uncomfortable smile.

“I’m sorry.” I say and pause for a moment. “You know it’s just stupid. Stupid how everyone thinks of you as the terrible seductress who guiled their chaste chief into deadly war.”

“No, no I understand." She quickly assures. "How could a 22 year old illiterate furless slave girl and chief who never remarried for twenty years just be together? They just staring and whispering, nothing bad, nothing serious. They don’t matter, just my family does now.” The ratwoman says, gracing her paw over her stomach.

I nod. I admire her positivity and strength. She’s a good rat, I just wished everyone could just see and stop thinking of her as their scapemountaingoat. After three generations, the Snout family’s animosity would just have to boil over at some point. She is only a rat who just happened to be who my father loved.

“We better get going to sleep now.” Thea suggests as she stands up. “Didn’t you tell the clan at dinner that we’ll be traveling a lot now?”

“Yes, you are right, Thea. Let us get going.” I reply as we both trot off to the tent.
~
The Snout Clan begins to migrate north in search of a land possessing building materials, wood or stone, or a large reliable source of water.
