Help with a Fortress name.
« on: September 19, 2015, 09:16:31 pm »

Hey guys, I'm hoping you can help me out with this. It's been a couple of hours now I'm staring at the choose name screen and still I'm not satisfied with what I can come up with. It's not an actual problem, but I would love some suggestions on this little puzzle I'm having with naming my latest fortress. You see, I want to pay homage to one of my favorite books, Don Quixote de La Mancha. In the book, the Sancho character keeps calling Don Quixote caballero de la triste figure or Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance in English (I actually kinda prefer the english translation for this 'honorific' title Sancho gives his master.)

So I decided to try to name the fortress Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance. Right of the bat there are problems. The words sorrowful and countenance don't show up in any compounds or adjectives. So I tried to play around with a lot of approximations. So far i got:

Arzes Egur (It sounds nice but it's not really close to the original)
The Knight of Sorrow
-
Mukararzes (even farther away from the original meaning but ok)
Sadknight
-
Arzeslīnen Mukar (a more literal approximation I think)
Knightface of Sadness
-
Arzes Līnem Mukar (all over the walls by now but I'm trying everything)
Knight the Face of Sadness
-

And that's that. Still not very good. I'm still playing around with the possibilities but I would love to hear your suggestions.

Here's a pic for inspiration.

I actually kinda like getting a random name, and then trying to make a fortress for which it would make sense. For example, if I embark and my fort is named 'Slaughter Chambers'  you better bet I'm building a slaughter chamber.

Kastudos Mukarnåstarzes
"Geniusman the Sad Show-Knight"

(Don Quixote also has the title of 'Ingenious Gentleman'.)

What about "Fatespurned the comedic knight of miseries"?

I think "windmills" and "donkey" might both be possible fortress words, if that's any help.

Fun fact: you can edit the file (path starting at DF's top directory) raw/objects/language_DWARF.txt . If you don't want to create a new world, you can't add new lines to it, but you *can* replace an existing line (the infamous community fortress of Battlefailed, for instance, replaced the word "oar" with the word "cannon" when they built their Failcannon). If you don't mind creating a new world, adding a line in the same format as the rest of the file should be fine.

Thanks guys. The idea of doing a name with windmill and donkey is quite interesting, I'll try that next time. Kastudos Mukarnåstarzes is also pretty good.
