Medication
« on: September 16, 2015, 09:17:22 pm »

I've been stressing alot lately in my life with my college life-style and the workloads. I sort of wanted to know if there are any medications I can buy to help me relax that are legal.

I have no insurance and my red neck floridians will probally not allow me a consultation with my doctor unless I produce 300$.

herbal tea with valerian would do that.
Over here in the Netherlands it's readily available at the supermarkets, at the herbal and health tea section

I will second the vote for trying tea. I personally find chamomile to be smoothing. A quick google check confirms that many others agree, but that kava, passionflower and valerian root apparently all have clinical research corroborating sedative and anti-anxiety effects.

This might be as simple as spending $5 at the grocery store every few weeks. Try a few different ones, see which work best for you.

Yes. Every listed in the thread so far can be bought at most grocery stores. Worst case you might have to try a Trader Joe's or other store that's "really just a grocery store but that tries to cater to people who want to be healthy" kind of store.

Note that valerian, kava, chamomile, etc. are plants, not brand names. If you go looking for boxes that have these words in big bold letters on the box you might not find them even if they're there. Be prepared to spend some time reading the boxes.

Concentrated valerian extract has been prescribed for a very long time by MPs and psychiatrists as a mild anti-anxiety and stress relief medicine, under the brand name "Valium". The herbal tea basically does the same thing, it's just less potent.

Heh chamomile. I use that when I have a stomach flu, for intestinal soothing. Or, if you have a clogged head from cold or flu, throw a handful of chamomile flowers in a bowl of steaming hot water, then hang your head over it, and a towel over your head to seal the vapour. Steam like that for 10 minutes and your head and nose should be clear again. Wonderful stuff, chamomile, and butt-cheap too. I've never found it to be sedating, or stress relieving beyond what "has enjoyed some nice tea lately" does in general, though.

I'm kinda new to tea. How is it made?

An i'm trying to look for tea to relax me from my panic attacks/stress. College Algebra (Damn I think i'm being known around here for that now) has just made me go bonkers.

I went on a rage the other day, walked through the pouring rain, and had a fit in my house. My moms mega worried about my sanity and I want to take in stuff that tells my body to chill the freak out. I've thought of buying weed but it's illegal and i'm sure I'd get caught or jumped with my limited monies.

Sorry for that description but yea relaxing teas would be my target of acquisition.

I'm kinda new to tea. How is it made?

1) boil water

2) put a teabag in a glass

3) pour boiling water in glass. Don't burn yourself.

4) leave the bag in the glass, let it cool down to drinking temperature

5) if you must, add some sugar for taste. I think valerian is pretty okay without sugar though, it's not too bitter.

6) drink.

NOTE: don't drink it all day long. Just drink a glass or two when you need it. Give it a while to take effect, don't binge on the stuff, because too much of it will just make you sleepy and drowsy, which isn't very good to combine with still having to do homework.

You sure on that name? Valium is the trade name for diazepam a potent benzodiazepine sedative and anxyolithic. Prescription-only.

You can also just get Valerian Root in a pill, although that tends to be used as a less-potent Valium. It's used as a sleep-aid. The tea will mellow you out as well.

Hmm I think you might be right. Looks like valium is indeed synthesized diazepam, which is not found in valerian. Although they both work by increasing the amount of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) in the brain. GABA has a calming effect on anxiety.

Actually benzodiazepines make the endogenous GABA more potent by connecting to an alosteric site.

If you just want to unwind from stress then all the suggestions made here are relevant. I'd advise avoiding green, white and black teas (or anything derived from the tea plant) as it contains caffein. It might make you more alert instead of helping to unwind.

In a rapid departure from requested information, go smoke some weed man. I'm sure you have some pothead friends, go chill at their place for a while.

Also, Tea + Warmth + Classical musical + some other interesting activity = success.

If you need a serious dose of "fuck it", it will accomplish that.

Dude, I'm hispanic. Cops LITERALLY want me to go smoke some weed so they can put me in for some quota. That's coming from someone who lives in a hispanic commuity with like 80% of the cops coming from the same country my parents came from.

I got the tea and it did the job just fine. The day i'll smoke some weed to unwind is when its legal and on my own. Not for nothing but I don't trust potheads and I kinda look down on them.

But i'm not going to lie that classical music bit I did by coincidence and ya I chilled out big time.
