Eleen wasn't done yet, apparently. She continued speaking to the bouncer, before moving on.

"...oh yeah, and where can I find the Mother and the Head? I took by your words they're meeting right now?"
"I believe they in a discussion, yes. To the right, up the stairs, and three doors on the left. Don't go wandering about."

With that, you follow the directions. The inside of the building is much nicer than your usual - the walls have glass spheres at regular intervals that must be gas lighting, and the whole place is immaculate.

and soon find yourself in front of an ornate oak door. A bronze-clad guard stand on either side, still as statues. They might have been granite, for all they reacted to your presence.

Upon the breastplates of each is a roughly forged image of a fist clutching an eye.

(Kas will be done later, short on time)

Eleen knew the guards were a symbol of intimidation-and, a warning not to be interrupted. She decided not to press the issue, wait until whoever was done to go in. Though her own job was going to be that much harder afterwards...these sorts of tactics her own order didn't really think were effective. The marked difference between them couldn't be more obvious-Eleen was armored only in a cloak, her weapons hidden from sight. She would have done this a lot quieter, without the hulking bodyguards. Now everyone in half the city would know the Church was investigating the College and that their was something there of interest...including, of course, the people (if they were people) that she was hunting.

She took a seat, relaxed herself, and began to nod off. A skill she had learned in the trenches, as it were-Eleen could drop into a half-sleep without much fuss, and she often did so when being forced to wait. She still had one eye open, as it were, and could rouse herself just as quickly.

She had learned to snatch sleep whenever she could, in the streets. It was, in fact, the origin of her nickname-Lean-not because she was actually was lean, but because she was often drafted as the lookout on a heist, and was often seen easing herself against a building in a completely innocent fashion...

Action: Time to sit and wait

"I am. Where did the creature go, and what did it look like?"

And how much had you had to drink? - Kas had to bite his tongue.

"As much detail as you remember."

He was rapidly discovering that he wasn't really cut out for this investigation business.

"Well, me an' all me mates were out for a piss up at the Mud Crown - horrible beer, but strong and cheap as well, mud - an' I'd brought me pistol, along with a few others of the lads, since we" d heard their were beasts about.

Anyway, we'd started staggerin' back to the ship when we heard growls. We were looking about to see where they were coming from when it must have jumped down from a rooftop.

It knocks us about a bit and grabbed him, and dragged him over the roofs. I shot at it, and I'm sure I 'it it, but it didn't even flinch. And then it 'as run off, and 'e was gone.

'E was my mate, he was."

The whittler shakes his head in commiseration.

Eleen knew the guards were a symbol of intimidation-and, a warning not to be interrupted. She decided not to press the issue, wait until whoever was done to go in. Action: Time to sit and wait

You wait for so long you almost begin to believe they're keeping you waiting deliberately. Finally, the door opens on oiled hinges, and the Head and the Major step out.

The head is a short man, wide with years of good eating. His well groomed beard is brown, streaked with white, and spectacles are perched on his nose. His ornate suit is well fitted, if straining a little to keep his stomach from bulging. His face has the expression if one used to getting his way suddenly denied.

The Major is a tall woman. Unlike the brutes either side of the door - more like Eleen, really - she wears very little armour, the bronze bracers, greaves and gauntlets the only metal in sight.  Her arms are left bare otherwise to the ahoulders... aside from the scars. Her blond hair is cropped short above an angular face.
"What?" she says bluntly.

Eleen had to settler herself down before responding. No good to lose her temper here...she rose up and offered her left hand to shake. Well, they could say she tried.

"I'm just in to see the head, myself-Redeeming Hand, investigating some matters. Just waiting politely for you to be finished. I hope you haven't ruined his mood...so then, shall we ask each others business, or just leave it for later?" she said, trying for levity.

"I know. Take your time."

The phrase kicked entirely against Kas's nature.

"But I really need t' details. What did it look like? Could you tell me exactly where it was?"

On a whim Kas pulls out the map.

"Better, could you mark where on here? And which way the beast went. And could you tell me who else was wit' you?"

He pauses, giving the man a chance to speak.

The Major does not seem amused by the levity!

Indeed, her grim expression only changes into a small frown at the mention of the Redeeming Hand.
"If you're here for the beasts, leave." she says flatly. "Your interference is not needed."

Whoever told you she had the tact of a battle-axe was a gods-damned liar. She has far, far less.

"The pub? I can take you there, mate. ''s right on the docks, between Fisher Alley and Gibbet Street.

The beast? It was big. 'ad to be eight foot tall at the very least. Claws like swords, and it's eyes were like fire. They glowed. I already told you, it went over the rooftops, further in town. Was still in the docks when we lost it. As fer the group o' us... there was the poor fellow himself, me, Big Jim, Scabs, Small Jim... er, Rick, Bottle, and Gumber. Think that was all."

Eleen didn't want to make a scene...not with the whole college watching. Still, backing down wasn't in her nature.

"Sure, but when has being wanted or needed ever held me back?" She said, her tone hardening. "With all due respect, Major, I've no time for a di...er, a rank measuring contest with you. I've got a job to do, and lives to save. People are dying every hour we waste. So kindly, stand aside."

Eleen was going to get up and walk past the woman no matter what she did. At least she wouldn't throw the first punch. This time...

Action: Unless the woman slugs me or pulls a knife, I walk past her-and, go talk to the head and try to get a few minutes of his time

Kas sighed under his breath. This really was starting to sound like a drunken tail chase.

"That'll do fine. Any luck and I'll be seeing you again shortly."

He nods, and stands to leave, with the intention of meeting whoever was handy of the other group members mentioned.

The Major merely makes a dismissive sound, then barks:
"Guards!"
You stiffen, expecting a fight, but she merely continues.
"Remain here. Head, I trust you will remember the consequences of speaking out of turn? Think on that before you go spreading around information to ears that are 'neither wanted nor needed'."
The Head gulps and retreats into his office, leaving the door open. She starts off down the hall, seemingly unfazed.

The guards might have been iron for all they moved during the whole affair.

Kas sighed under his breath. This really was starting to sound like a drunken tail chase.

Time passes, as you talk to the others mentioned. With only minor differences - the beast had brown fur, it had black, etc - you hear the same rough story repeated, with the accuracy you could have expected from sailors who were drunk at the time. Eventually, there's no more to talk to, and you stop, your throat slightly dry.

Oriana had been silent during the verbal showdown. She didn't have any hand in the affairs of the church, anything she'd said could have made the Major or Eleen angry. For a moment she was confused who the Major was talking to, then she realized she was talking to the statues. Evidently she was insane. Once Eleen heads in, Oriana follows.

Kas nodded to the sailor who had been escorting him.

"Thankya'. I should be able to see myself out. Give your captain my thanks."

He waited for a response, and tried to figure out the best route to the lower decks using his knowledge of ships.

Eleen tried not to grumble at the major. Why here, now? It did no good to show in public that the Church has internal troubles...she'd have appreciated an offer to settle their differences, but for now it was time to work...

She sighed and made her way to the Head, who was probably having a bad day all round.

Action: To the no doubt uncomfortable meeting with the Head!
