To be fair it says to keep them on the low, not to avoid them completely.

Paganism fell off, like, a LOT between when it was widely practiced to the modern times.  I'm not sure if any of them ever hit literally zero worshipers but I wouldn't be suprised.  So modern Pagans can be thought of as essentially a separate religion that believes the same general things that the original Pagans did, thus Neopagans.

It would be like in a few thousand years .001% of the world's population is Christian and then some people from formerly majority Christian nations picked up some antique bibles and decided they wanted to be Christian now.

Pretty much except Pagan was a term used to describe anyone who didn't believe in the "one true god". It's less like an old religion revived than the reappropriation of a term by some of the people who still fall under the original definition. In terms of belief the greatest similarity between classical and modern Pagans is the diversity; A number of common beliefs are not that historical and instead based on romantic ideas about pre-Christian times and the records of those using the term Pagan (bit like Romans giving a skewed view of so called Barbarians).

Just to be clear I'm not being critical of Paganism because some of their beliefs aren't as historical as they seem. I'd be missing the point to criticise on such grounds and it's not uncommon even in non-religious settings (skewed zero on 10 Downing Street for one). I'd imagine some of the antique beliefs modern Pagans base theirs on came about similarly.
