As a scout, we're more likely to get shot.

Infantry are more likely to be promoted.

You quickly fill out the form and hand it back to the Knight who takes the time to copy the sheet before handing it back to you.

"Head through the gates, turn right, and walk to the large building set up against the side of the palisade with that form. Once you're there wait for the Quartermasters to see you and hand that in to be given the rest of your equipment as well as your schedule for the next few days since the newly arriving Scouts are going to be busy now that we have the men we need."

With that the Knight dismisses you with a wave and you follow his instructions as you cross through the gate shifting the rifle strapped to your back as you go. The inside of Fort Macknare is surprisingly organized as neat rows of tents, and buildings fill the area while troops make sure to keep some order in their movements as they go about their day. Excited to see what new gear the Kingdom is going to give out you follow the Knight's orders in a hurry only to arrive at the armory, and find a rather long line awaiting you.

---

After what feels like hours you finally make it into the armory and find a rather small room boxed in with windows interspersed in the walls where around a dozen men sit waiting on various soldiers, and handing out equipment to them. You head to the nearest window and place the form down onto it just as a rather skinny fellow with greying hair walks up to the other side. Looking you over for the moment the man then scans the form before speaking,

"Alright, so my name is Ethan and until you receive further notice all your transactions with Armory and Supply division are to be done through me. As you know you're to be handed new equipment today, but Scouts are given a choice between two sets unlike the Infantry or Sharpshooters so take a look over this form and decide what you want to take. However, keep in mind that what you pick will influence what missions you'll be getting sent on so choose carefully. If you have any questions feel free to ask."

With that Ethan slides a somewhat crumpled, and yellowing paper over to you.

So basically we get to choose between more good stuff (AND A HORSE!) and probably much more suicidal missions, or less good stuff and safer missions. Advance Scout it is!

Definitely advanced scouts.
I want to explore post-apocalyptic Scotland far behind the hordes of axe swinging giants ;)

What are the paper cartridges for?

>picket duty

>safe

Pretty much any enemy force trying to be even slightly stealthy will start by picking off the pickets. They're pretty exposed, usually walking a beat away from the main force, and easily killed by sharpshooters.

So it's exciting and dangerous duty or boring and dangerous duty, honestly.

Advanced Scout, since we might actually get noticed that way.

What are the paper cartridges for?
The paper cartridges contain powder, and a .44 musket ball (Imperial is used for its size because the Kingdom thought calling it a 11.176mm musket ball was weird) which you then load into your rifle. The rifle you already had when you arrived, and its called a Farrier Longrifle. (It resembles this for those interested.)

That's the missing link for me ;)
I know what they are, I was just confused about having them without having a rifle.

"I'll take the Advance Scout Kit, seems a bit more useful a role than picket duty."

Ethan nods before walking away from the counter, and returning with a satchel and saddlebag that is presumably filled with your new gear. As Ethan starts talking you take the time to make sure everything is in order,

"We've been short on advance scouts recently, so its a good thing that you volunteered or we'd have to start conscripting them. Take these and head on over to the north gate to meet with your commanding officer, and get your first assignment."

With that Ethan ushers you out of the armory, and you grudgingly head towards the assigned meeting point to see what your new commander has in store for you.

---

After some trouble navigating through the fort you finally find your way to the north gate to find a group of about thirty people milling around near a crudely built stables with a somewhat aging man watching them. Seeing you arrive the man finally sees fit to act as he clears his throat causing the group to fall silent,

"Well then, I think we've waited long enough so if any others arrive after this I'll be dropping the worst jobs on them. I'm the Scout Commander in charge of all scouts assigned here to Fort Macknare, the name is Albert, but I expect you to call me by Commander from here on out. Now I know many of you have just arrived, but we don't have the time to waste for you all to rest from the journey north.

Now that we have the manpower we need to get eyes out to tell us what exactly we're dealing with here. Yorkshire Dale Forest is a mostly unknown land to us, we have some old pre-war maps, but no real idea about how the place has changed since then or if an area has enemy presence. Some of you will be operating in groups while others are going to be sent in alone into territories we suspect are hostile.

The first target of interest is are the two of the major peaks in the forest, some places called Whernside and Pen-y-ghent, which we've been charged with establishing forward bases at. A group of six will be sent to each with some basic supplies, but you'll need to establish what bases you can in secret.

Next, two groups of five are being dispatched to patrol the regions that used to be called Gearstones and Birkwith to see if there are any locals nearby. Your job is to investigate to see if any locals are hostile, check for the presence of Whig of Celt soldiers, and make contact with locals deemed friendly. We're hoping to establish what connections we can with the locals.

Finally, I'll be sending out six of you alone to investigate both former towns in the area and places we're convinced is dangerous. While these areas are deemed dangerous you will be compensated for the risk with a fifty percent increase to your pay.

Now if first up, anyone want to volunteer?"

====

{A} Volunteer for one of the advance base groups.
{B} Volunteer to join one of the patrols.
{C} Volunteer for the solo mission.
{D} Wait and let Commander Albert decide.

We're not that experienced yet, so I think we shouldn't do that solo mission.
Patrolling and making contact with locals sounds like it could be fun and still hold some surprises for us. :)

I vote for B
