That's you first one?  Lucky.  Most of them are not at all interesting or useful.

Great! Just imagine Urist McMiner cutting through rock like it was butter, with a tool made of bone!
(Seriously though: Artifacts are nearly indestructible, and given the low density of bone, I wouldn't be surprised if this pick is much lighter than usual metal-made ones. Also, according to the Wiki the pick material doesn't have any effect on its use as a tool, so if it indeed weighs less, the miner wielding it might be able to move a bit faster than other pitmen. I don't know if dwarfs will equip artifacts without being explicitly told to do though...)

If you happen to be playing Masterwork or The Earth Strikes Back, you'd want to have a nice hefty pick with you when you're all alone deep in the mines.

But as Ace said, useful artifacts are a rare treasure.  Anyone need a hematite floodgate?

But Artifact floodgates are usefull   :-\

They can't be taken down by building distroyers so your magma based projects won't flood the fort when attacked. And they can even act like a lever connected door.  :D

Neat Artifact! My dorfs just keep pumping out stone amulets and leather hoods. Boring things.

I just had a dwarf successfully fend off and kill a werepanda using a standard (but well made) iron pick. It was all he had to hand. They're very effective weapons. Perhaps you could equip your bone pick to your Champion or the leader of one of your hand to hand combat teams, as a rather unconventional but very effective weapon.

There are many good unconventional weapons out there. Crutches, if made of heavy materials such as gold and lead, can make amazingly effective bludgeoning weapons. I never allow any light-material crutches in my forts, and when a dorf looses a leg, Urist McOneleg goes and picks up one of the only crutches available: Lead ones with gold plating, or gold ones with lead plating. I then assign McOneleg to the military, and it is remarkable how often the enemy get whacked over the head with a gold crutch...

At least your artifact is useful. My dwarves keep making candy-based clothing. True, they're worth over one million monies, but they're still totally worthless.

Lead ones with gold plating, or gold ones with lead plating.
*makes object out of valuable metal*
*covers said object with a less valuable, poisonous metal*
This sums up the spirit of DF crafting nicely

I always thought candy clothing is great against edged weapon attacks?

Not really any more so than regular clothes, and it still decays through wear (not the artifacts to my knowledge.)

As for OP, nice score, I don't even remember my first artifact, but I know it wasn't anything so incredibly useful as a bone pick.

Even more useful than the bone pick. Copper is a decent material for blunt weapons due to its density. No decorations helps keep the fortress value down, which will delay megabeast attacks, noble appointments etc.

Picks are good because they are very sharp and penetrating.

A bone pick would have very low cutting power because all bone artifact weapons have low cutting power. And low weight. So very little blunt damage effectiveness. A bone pick would be useful as a mining tool but that's all, really. Still more useful than a wood amulet menacing with spikes of wood.

I got a plat warhammer in my current fort... which has a pop cap of 20 and sits under a glacier covered with ooze that puts everything but zombies to sleep, so there ain't no military... I set it up as a weapon trap in the queen's bedroom for happy thoughts/room value.
