Magma pillar & starting a fire
« on: September 13, 2015, 11:46:36 am »

- I have a magma pool in the third cavern that drains off the edge of the cavern. While in the slow process of sealing the pool I've noted occasional odd pillars in the pool, i.e. magma of e.g. depth 4/7 on top of 7/7 on top of 7/7 where the lowest of these sits within a sea of 6/7 and 5/7 (lower towards the edge). Is this some indication that the pool should have been two levels higher, but draining prevents that level from being reached and the pillars are where new magma is generated to top it up?

- I was trying to start a fire in the 2:nd caverns since it's crawling with undead (none of them flying, I think) by dumping a mine cart of magma from above, but all that achieved was to burn the moss in the two tiles where the magma ended up (which you might guess from the wiki). The magma pool in the question above sparks fires from time to time, however. Is there a good way to reliably start a spreading fire? I don't have access to graphite (which I think is supposed to burn for a long time when set alight).
Edit: Would dumping magma into the undead crundle horde work, hopefully they'd then run around and setting each other and the environment on fire rather than just stand there?

That would work, though flame creatures like FBs and titans are the best way to set everything on fire.

Flame producing creatures are hard to acquire. I found it isn't practical to try to set fire to creatures, since they move to slaughter newcomers in the time it takes to dig, build track stop, haul magma cart, etc. However, setting fire to a suitable cavern tree foliage seems to do the trick.

Edit:
Well, I did manage to set the cavern vegetation on fire, but the undead proves to be very resistant to fire, so they have suffered no or little harm. However, the FPS seems to have improved as a lot of webs have been burned away.
Note to self: Burn out the top two caverns every 5 years or so to get rid of webs.

Yeah I think corpses can burn but zombies don't, furnaceclans (sp? single pick challenge) had a minecart system to kill zombies and drop them into a magma moat.

A real man opens the circus to the undead cavern and then cleans up whichever side refuses to die first  :)

Am I a coward then if I insist on wiping out both sides? ;)

The fire didn't do much, if anything, to clean away the dead bodies/skeletons littering the cavern floor. I built an atom smashing device and manage to get rid of 50 or so, but the last 20 refused to come (and blind cave ogres, jabberers, and one[!] GCS smashed my bridges, so I had to stop and rebuild a couple of times). My under equipped militia (bone/leather armor, metal weapons) was sent in on a couple of raids and cleared out half of the remainder, but then an FB arrived, so I have to see what to get rid of afterwards (undead FBs don't behave as normal ones: I had a juicy door as bait for another one, but it just stood there, 5 tiles away. It moved only when I unlocked the door).

Depends on your version. DF2014's pulping system fixed it.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Wel, my DF2014 fortress failed to get either corpses or undead on fire using a bush fire. However, I have previously (earlier fortress, same DF version) successfully incinerated undead dark tower invaders by pitting them in magma. However, since dark tower invaders fight undead yetis and the bits of the slain invaders are then reanimated to fight their former comrades there might be two kinds of undeath?
