crossing water

so I was revisiting Boatmurdered last night...what a classic.

I realize that was a much older version of the game so wondered if what they did in channeling the river into a moat actually worked still?

I know there are now swimming creatures that evidently didn't exist back then but just wondering if that is a viable mode of defense any longer.

Yes, you can dig a moat around your fort which has some limited benefits.  Most invaders won't pass through water but fliers can pass right over it.  It won't stop projectiles, and you'll still need a path over land in order to trade.

A large wall around your fort serves as a better defense, though it takes a while to build and it is possible to climb walls now.  A fort with a moat in front of a wall is hard to siege.

Moat and wall is a good combo.
Moat - Land based creatures will refuse to cross, but has no effect on swimmers.
Wall - Must be climbed in order to pass

I've yet to see a creature that could swim and climb, but even if you encounter one a 2lvl high block wall topped with fortifications is more than sufficient.
Overall I'd say the moat is best dug early as a quick easy defense against land dwellers.
But you'll want a wall to block arrows, swimmers, and scaredy-dwarf line of sight.
Moats still look cool though, especially if filled with magma or undead horrors.

Yup. Nothing beats a moat filled with magma. Well, something do, and some things, as Boatmurdered history tells us, can kill a fort from inside. But the epicness of a magma-filled moat is truly unbeatable.

Or, you could fill the moat with Aquatic creatures.

Nothing beats a moat full of Tigerfish.

2. Build the cages on the bottom of your moat;
3. Link the cages to a lever with magma-proof mechanisms;
4. Build a bridge over the moat;
5. Fill the moat. With magma, of course. What do you need magma-proof things other than for drowning them in magma, Urist?
5. When invaders come, raise the bridge and release the magma creatures;
6. Profit.

Will they swim after dodging incoming magma crab spitball into the moat?

Yes, capturing them first in the country may be fun but capturing them after you released them on invasion and those crabs are now wandering just around your walls may lead to really big FUN.

Hmm, I have a walled area next to a volcano in my current embark area...

Which shouldn't be enough time for the player to notice them swimming. Or is it? Hum... another topic for dwarven science: how long time can a troll swim in lava before it dies?  ::)
