« on: September 10, 2015, 03:41:47 pm »

Since Dawn of Evolution III died, I'm starting my own dawn of evolution game

Spoiler: species template (click to show/hide)

The setting for this game is a pair of underwater mountains, there are 6 locations:
"peaks"
base of the mountains
open ocean
kelp forests
reefs
deep ocean

Spoiler: map (click to show/hide)

As usual for these games you gain 1 evolutionary point(EP) per turn, more if your species is in unfavorable conditions

starting at turn 3 and every other turn afterwards there will be random events

name: Angelic Sea Newt
description: A large pale semi-transparent newt which has taken to the ocean. It is about two feet long. It's body is covered in very fine jellyfish like tentacles about half a foot in length. When threatened it holds still and stiffens the tentacles causing them to stick straight out. These cause massive pain and paralysis to those who come in contact with them. It has two longer whisker like tentacles by its mouth which are each a foot long. It can control these with great accuracy and uses them when hunting small prey. (Think an Axolotl mixed with a jellyfish).
diet: Omnivore
unusual traits: Stinging hairlike tentacles over the entire body.
location: Reefs.

Why do these keep dying and having to be resurrected? I'm running out of ideas here.

Its a hard and uninteresting game to GM. All the creativity belongs to the player with nothing fun for the GM left to do. Plus a fair deal of writing on a regular basis.

I would disagree.

The original continually presented new challenges and opportunities for each species. The environment adapted alongside the creations, and it kept going for a while. There was plenty for the GM to do, creatively and otherwise. The more recent ones have gotten more and more focused on the player doing things on their own, rather than actually and actively having their species react to the environment, and thus evolve naturally, they've gotten to be more about what the player wants to do, or trying to 'win', or this or that. The GMs very well could make it interesting and fun for most parties(there will always be the player who wants to be isolationist or do whatever is nigh-impossible), and our first one did. Lasted the longest for a reason; I believe it was a matter of not having enough time, not a lack of interest.

But yes, lots and lots of writing.

I never saw the first one, I only saw Lord_Lemonpie's version so I cannot speak for them. That sounds much more interesting.

Maybe we should revive the original.

I would, but I'm not exactly an experienced GM. That said, I do enjoy coming up with interesting/strange creatures, so I already have a decent nember of animals/plants/fungi I could use to populate the game.
