I've been seeing it pop up on my computer at various times.

At one point the executable that put the Windows 10 upgrade in your task bar was activated by a Scheduled Task, which you could disable. The task would re-up the executable like every 10 minutes or something in case you tried to kill it. In a following update though they re-chajiggered how its gets started and run.

Now that I look, I don't even see the executable for it running anymore either. Maybe they buried that too. (Or maybe it went away after I downloaded the update but didn't install it.)

The constant self-advertising is pretty damn annoying.  One can only hope that microsoft never leverages it for the dark side...

Right... I've been using Win 10 for a couple of days now, and I can list the pros and cons over Win 7 Pro, from a personal point of view.

Cons:
- Spyware.
- Oodles of smartphone-like cloud-sync cruft that's of no use on a gaming PC.
- Random wonkiness (e.g. can't install updates when logged in as a regular user).

Pros:
- Boots faster(?) (I'm not entirely sure about that because I recently bought a snappy new SSD and Win 7 was pretty darn fast even before the Win 10 update.)
- ? ? ?
- Micro$oft.

Oh well... no use tilting at windmills, dogs bark and the caravan goes on, nerd-rage is the mind-killer, &c. &c.

EDIT: By the way, I still don't understand how I'm going to re-install Windows now that I don't own the physical install media anymore. Is Win 10 revolutionary enough to not require regular re-installing, unlike all previous versions of Windows? Fat chance.

I have been using Windows 10 for a few weeks now.
I have to say it seems to run a bit faster, but I have some bugs. First: My Taskmanager is Buggy, the CPU is at 100% all the time. It tries to convince me that the Explorer.exe or taskmgr.exe use up around 80% of my CPU, which is quite impossible. It shows me correct values when I Switch to the "Detailed" Tab (sorry if the Name is wrong, I use the german Version of the OS). I decided to live with this since it seems to be something cosmetic without causing any real problems.
A way bigger Problem is, that my OS now freezes randomly and I have to restart the PC through the power button. I couldn't figure out what's causing this Problem so far. I have looked into the Event log and it's full of Problems and warnings of various Services and I haven't been annoyed enough to really look into it.
Anyway from my point of view I would advice against an upgrade. I would wait a little longer since some Systems (like mine) still have Problems.

To piggyback off of K41N, Personally I'd advise to download the update unless you're worried about drive space already, and install it in a month or five- on release it came out weird; my laptop's start menu/taskbar would break after ~1-2 hours, i.e. completely unusable until reset. Had already gotten my rainmeter working with all my actually used programs linked, so it didn't bother me much, but it seems fixed in the last few weeks.

To me it seems like a nice upgrade, but if you're wary of bugs they're fixing them relatively quickly so wait a few months.

Thats what people have been saying the whole time: its a year to upgrade, which means wait until they've fixed the bugs next year to use it.

Pretty much all the bugs/"bugs" I'm aware of are related to touchscreens, touchscreen keyboards, Windows Store apps, Microsoft Edge (if you don't have another PDF reader for god knows what reason), and Cortana directing all searches through Bing.

In other words, the problems are all with the useless shit that we all turn off as soon as we can. I've been using 10 with Classic Shell for a couple months now, zero bugs or OS-related issues thusfar.

Hence the "bug". It apparently also automatically makes in-system searches simultaneously search Bing, but I wouldn't know because I took that bitch behind the barn with a metaphorical shotgun as soon as W10 finished installing for trying to trick me into using Bing. I'll take a sexy fake AI in my computer when it doesn't come with a bushel full of strings attached.

Cortana is a good first attempt by Microsoft but as 99% of things you ask it just come back as a bing search I personally don't use it. I can run searches by myself.

Read the whole EULA first.

Is there something special/out-of-the-ordinary in the EULA?

You don't have to use Cortana. Removing it is pretty much the first thing anyone with half a brain will do.

This hubbub about invasion of privacy in Win10 is entirely oriented around two things:

1. An optional gimmick.
2. The old "can we gather your data pls" options which have been present in the Windows install sequence for ages are ticked by default.

So there's a simple process to resolve that:
1. Uninstall Cortana after Windows is finished installing.
2. Untick those options during the installation.

"Journalists" combined that with
Quote from: Windows 10 License
6.   Updates. The software periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you. You may obtain updates only from Microsoft or authorized sources, and Microsoft may need to update your system to provide you with those updates. By accepting this agreement, you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice.

to create a scare about "OMGWTFBBQ Microsoft are teh scanning ur computers and bricking them remotely if u r teh piratez!"
