The Tombs of Silence gained their false name when necromancers descended upon their lands, their deep halls, sunken cities of stone, tunnels and caverns, working dark magics, twisting the very land itself, cursing it so that all that die rise up again as unliving abominations. The necromancers have been defeated now, enslaved by the Tombs of Silence to do their bidding, but their curse remains, too powerful for even the necromancers themselves to remove or undo.
Now the legacy of the curse has shaped the form of the Babbling Labyrinth, with every wall, ceiling and floor housing a honoured dwarven ancestor behind it, entombed in thick steel-rebar reinforced concrete, with no escape, their mindless noises forming together into a background cacophony that permeates the entire Labyrinth. Space is at a premium underground, and as time passed, more and more of it had to be filled with the graves of the neverdead, their corporeal bodies having to remain intact, lest they be free from their physical coils as wrathful spirits that would be much more dangerous overall than the slight annoyance of their current groaning.
The dwarves of the Tomb of Silence had adapted, wearing thick ear-mufflers at nearly all times, communicating through an intricate sign language. Now the sought to expand into new lands, to gain more space to store the corpses of their forefathers.
The Arch-Signer shuffled through cramped, winding passages engraved with cowering reanimated dragons and chained necromancers, making his way to bottom-most of the forsaken pits. He finally came to a thick, steel-grated rock crystal window, beyond it a cowled, miserable figure studying some tomb of undead lore. Imperiously the Arch-Signer tapped against the glass with his staff of office, and when the imprisoned necromaner turned to look at him, he signed his orders. The necromancer was to raise a new zombie army of goblin undead, fresh from the breeding pits, for the Tombs were making ready for war.

As a side-effect of their enforced life of quiet contemplation, many Tombers became great scholars, thinkers and philosophers. Recently, decades of idle speculation on the nature of life and death have taken form into several extremely influential schools of Tomber thought, which spread beyond their borders, increasing their influence within the Deep Halls.
