Yeah, there are some really cool big ideas, but I feel like they horribly botched the implementation of them. As a Retainer, you get a fief which is basically a tiny village (that's actually visible on the map!) and you build upgrades for it in the same way you can for castles/towns, but the bonuses are massively scaled back. I guess it's the equivalent of being a baron in CK2 vs being a count. The problem is, you kind of suffer from this player exceptionalism where no other characters in the game get their own fiefs: the entire mechanic just exists to give you something to do before you're promoted to Lord.

The promotions also feel kind of wonky since there's not really any competition. If you do your missions then eventually your Daimyo throws his hands up and says, "Well, I guess you're Regent now!" and hands over the reins to you.

Still, if they keep working on these kinds of mechanics, maybe in a few more releases we'll have a really great game. I just hope they continue localizing them into English.

Ascension is kind of a step back from the officer play games of their RotK franchise.  The whole officer play part was just tacked on to the system, rather properly built from the ground up.

And yes, AI Daiymo won't ever promote NPC to Lords/Regent, so there is no such thing as inter-clan competition.
Just you as the sole rising star in your Clan. Probably a smooth ride to Daiymo.
