On the top of the forum, there's a button called "Show new replies to your posts." which is a handy shortcut to all the threads that you've posted in that have been updated. Posting a PTW in a thead just means you don't have anything to add right now, but you still want to know when the thread has new replies.

This is different from the notify button, which sends you an email when the thread has a reply.

When I started seeing that, I Googled it and the first definition was "pass the weed".  Glad it turned out to be "post to watch" instead.

You can change that notify behavior, though, and use the notify button to follow threads, and also unnotify (which I believe you can't with with the Show new replies feature).

Go to Profile, and on the sidebar, on Notifications. Uncheck "When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email (but please don't reply to these emails.)". i usually just do exactly that: disable email notification for new replies or only for my own threads and subscribed threads.

In the UK PTW stands for Powered Two Wheeler, e.g. a motorbike.
