War for Andala, an Only War Campaign

DO NOT SUBMIT CHARACTER SHEETS. THIS GAME HAS A FEW STEPS BEFORE CHARACTER CREATION THAT HAVE TO BE TAKEN COOPERATIVELY BETWEEN ALL THE PLAYERS AS A GROUP. YOU CAN SUBMIT REGIMENT SHEETS. PLEASE REFER TO THE ONLY WAR CORE RULEBOOK FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THAT.

Hello ladies and gentlemen of Bay12. I am looking for 4-6ish players for a campaing of Only War, one of the few Warhammer 40k RPGs. The game would be played on roll20, Skype or Google Hangouts. For those who don't know, Only War makes the PCs soldiers of a regiment of the Imperial Guard created by all the players together, and as such is a game with a high rate of PC casualties, unless the players play intelligently and know how to avoid unnecessary danger (while avoiding Commisars who might think of that as cowardice).

I am looking for players with some experience with the system, or at least players who are not afraid of reading through the books and learning the rules (It's no the most heavy rules game ever, but it certainly takes some time). Of course, knowledge of WH40k is probably necessary to enjoy the game.

The players would be allowed to use the rules from the Core Rulebook, Hammer of the Emperor and Shield of Humanity, with some limitations regarding to Regiment Creation and Character Creation. These will be discussed later.

Players would be accepted depending on their ability to commit to the campaing (games would probably take place once a week or once every two weeks), the days and hours when they could play (I'm aiming for weekends, and I'm on GMT +2), and their knowledge of the system.

If a player wishes to play but doesn't have Hammer of the Emperor and/or Shield of Humanity, I could give them the information necessary for them at any point (Specialist careers that his character could be interested in, the costs and effects of new regiment options and so on).

This thread would then be use to post info about the game, such as regiment status, journals for the characters if you wish to write them, and maybe for the reports of your missions.

Character Sheets would be sent to me or stored in a Dropbox folder unless someone finds a better way to manage them.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

More information for the Campaing will be available later. But I can tell it will be a war for a subsector that has been attacked by rebels and xenos, mainly Tau and Orks. I'm not posting everything now because it is kinda late.

Subsector Andala

Part of the Crassean Sector, in the Ultima Segmentum, Subsector Andala is a small subsector, esentially a subsector of it's own only by virtue of it's isolation. Warp travel to the region is almost impossible, and prior to this crisis, only one stable Warp Route was known to go to the Subsector.

The Warp is unstable in the region, and a Warp Storm exists in the middle of the Subsector since it's founding. It's worlds are, however, quite rich in resources, and because of its isolation, it became quite independent from the rest of the Sector and the Imperium at large. For some senior adepts in the Sector, who had been warning Lord Sector Crassus XVII of the dangers of such independency, it came as no surprise when Basileus Yrine I declared the subsector independent from the Imperium after being able to dispose of Waaagh! Onetoof without Imperial aid.

Of course, imperial reaction was swift. Many regiments were raised all across the Sector, with even some regiments coming from across the Imperium to fight here. The Departamento Munitorum will issue an appropiate response to deal with the rebels, as well as to deal with the Tau that have been detected on the eastern fringe of the Subsector and the new Waaagh! assembled by Warboss Onetoof.

I would be totally in to it but could someone perhaps send me a link to the rule book?

I remember creating one before but lost the sheet when I wiped my old computer. I have knowledge of WH 40k and i've read the first and only/faith and fire series.

I can play at anytime on Thursday as well as the weekends (Saturday and Sunday). By the way that's on the Eastern time zone.

If anyone needs me i'll be googleing a PDF version of only war.

Well, I can't post a link for it here (I'm quite sure that's against the forum's rules). But I might be able to provide it for the players (if only because that's what I would also do in a RL game, not everyone in the group needs a copy of the game).

Here you can download editable character sheets. These should be handy for the players.

Interesting. I'll give it a read and submit a sheet.

"Hey steve." You speak into the air.

"Could you guys also make a hamburger out of this arm when they cut it off? I wanted to eat it just for the sake of tasting it."
>That is horrible and disgusting. It will no doubt set you apart and create fear in your team mates. So of course.

Question are storm troopers considered support and thus only get 300XP?

I'm asking because one skill that I want called protector is worth exactly 300XP and i'm wondering to get that or the other skills in the recommended table. btw I found the corebook.

Yes, they are still considered support for crunch. They are only regiment veterans for fluffy reasons (In my experience, they work better that way).

Can I PM you what I have already and tell me what I need? I have my stats and decided to spend 300 xp to get protector. Not sure what's next or how to do it.

You shouldn't be working on your character yet. First comes Regiment Creation, and that is done by all the players together.

We could be part of the Cadian regiment or the kriegs. Their pre built sure but there both
Pretty big on the list of badasses.

I'd argue there more awesome than the blood ravens and some other chapters.

Btw are going to fight chaos or Orks? Or something worse?

Until I have 4 players at least, we won't start with regiment creation. And although it could happen that the groups decides to play one of the pregenerated regiments, I feel like that takes part of the fun away.

Also, do not confuse Imperial Guard Regiments with Space Marine Chapters. Whole different thing.

And you will mainly be fighting Tau, Orks and rebels.

EDIT: I will be posting an example of how the thing goes for creating the Regiment and then the Characters as it seems some people might be getting it wrong.

Regiment Creation Example

So 4 players (A, B, C and D) sit together to create an Imperial Guard Regiment for Only War. They have decided that each of them will make a suggestion and then they will try to mix them. They know they might have to do some changes to their initial idea, but there should be no problem at first. They also know that at some point they might have to adapt their suggestions to what the others want.

A wants the regiment to be able to operate behind enemy lines and without support. This means Regiments like Line Infantry and Siege Infantry are not adequate. B, C and D are mostly ok with this. B has read the rules about mounts and such in Hammer of the Emperor, and he wants to give them a try, but he doesn't feel like doing a Rough Rider Regiment. So he suggests taking Light Infantry and the Cavalry Mounts doctrine. This way, he says, they could operate ahead of the main Imperial Guard line with increased mobility and without relying on things such as fuel.

All the other players are excited by that, and after thinking for a while, C decides that the Regiment should come from an Imperial World, which has some technology, but where motor vehicles are reserved for the elite. Because of this, lower class citizens have to ride animals for transportation. Because it could be possible that other Regiments are raised from the elite of that planet, he suggests taking both the Imperial World Origin and the Rivalry Drawback, to represent the resentment against the regiments raised from the upper classes of their planet, who do have vehicles. A, B and D agree, and this sets them with 6 remaining points, and they still have to choose a commanding officer. They choose phlemagtic after some thinking (mostly because of the low cost, and because none of the other options really convince them.

With 5 points remaining, D suggests the Forward Observation doctrine, which gives them access to exploration equipment, such as magnoculars, chameleoline cloaks and so on. This seems like something that would come in handy for a regiment that fights behind enemy lines. This leaves them with 1 unused point, so they have 2 extra points for their Regimental Standard Kit.

When choosing their equipment, they have 32 points, because they had 2 extra. At this point, the players decide that they will choose one item each, and then decide on any left overs. They choose Micro-beads, Respirators, upgrading their lascarbine to a lasgun and survival suits. With the left overs, they take 2 extra weeks of rations, which seems important considering they will probably not resupply often.

Because they have chosen cavalry mounts, they can create their own mounts, but this is beyond the scope of this explanation.

Only after this is over will they create their characters.

That specific format is hard to run on a forum because the communication is -much- slower than it would be around a table, and when it boils down to it there's a lot of work in regiment creation, which someone chilling behind their computer might not want to do. What I was going to do was generate a suggested regiment of my own and see if people liked it.
