Over Easy, a brutal platformer by yours truly [SOUNDS SO REAL]
« on: September 06, 2015, 05:07:49 pm »

I tried to move the thread to Other Games, but it isn't here...? I apologize if it ended up somewhere that it wasn't supposed to! Please message me if I messed something up!

Anyways, I'm developing a video game! It's called Over Easy!

But IINL, what is your game all about?

It's a brutal run-and-jump platformer in the style of Super Meat Boy, starring an egg! Your weeaboo best friend has been kidnapped by anime schoolgirls, and it's up to you to rescue him!

But IINL, what will the game have when it's finished?

Plenty of levels filled with tons of obstacles, traps, caltrops, and other things detrimental to an egg's well-being! Boss fights! HOT EGG-ON-EGG ACTION??? (probably not that last one though)

But IINL, can I play this game? If so, where?

Yes, that's right, the game's real! It's not just in my imagination! You can play it, boil it, mash it, stick it in a stew! (but the idea is that you play it and leave helpful feedback in this thread)

But IINL, your game is terrible and I hope you die?

That's not a question! Also, it's still in the early stages! As YandereDev is fond of saying, the game is less than n% complete!

*opens screenshots*

*blasted in the face with windows 95*

D:

... good luck and best wishes and all that, but woah that is a nostalgia trip/induced flashback in the worst (?) sort of way. It's the demo disks all over again DX

Won't... won't try it, 'cause Super Meat Boy style games are anti-enjoyment for my poor twitchless hands, but just wanted to say that. That and good luck et al.

I have to agree, the graphics are painful, painful flashbacks. Obviously graphics aren't everything, but atmosphere is. I'd really recommend either getting a graphic artist or just getting some of the free graphics off opengameart.com until then!

I drew some stuff that may be a bit easier on the eyes. It's quite repetitive-looking because there aren't any little decorations or doodads yet, but I'm wondering if this looks okay before I continue to draw more.

Alright so-
1. Get dropbox for your desktop
2. Auto-Compile and/or move your source folder to the dropbox folder.
3. Copy link to build.exe for ad nauseam downloads.

Bonus: everything is backed up if your computer ever dies.

I (sort of but not quite?) get confused just looking at it, try adding some Tiny tetrominos to the bricks?

It's certainly a hell of a lot better! Try to add as much subtle variation as you can between tiles and get some shadows going on. Pre-drawn shadows are fine (as in, darkened coloured blocks), they don't need to be rendered on the fly!

I'd personally try for a certain 'style' though. Pick one you like and then learn/borrow assets until you've got it all working and then hire or learn how to do more when you've got a fleshed out game.

Thanks for the feedback! What I really wish Game Maker had was a better tile-painting system. In the Starcraft map editor, each tile type had three or four variations, and it'd randomly pick one of those each time you placed a tile. Maybe there's something like that available as an extension for Game Maker, but I haven't really looked into it.

I've redrawn most of the tiles in this sort of dungeon aesthetic, which I'm not sure I'll keep, but it definitely looks a lot better than what there was before. There's a new version at the downloads page.

There's no ads or anything on my website; I just link to the page instead of straight to the download, because I know straight download links within a forum post can be kind of suspicious sometimes.

The header for Creative Projects says that game projects work either here or there.

That's not a question

I am pretty sure that question mark at the end pretty definitively makes it a question :P

Though I'll answer it: I am pretty sure you don't quite want them to die, perhaps sprain their ankles a bit or slip on a banana peel.

I remember playing a joke game entitled 'War of Stels' (by the later word the author casually meant 'stealth', I guess) which amused me a lot. Its plot was parodying MGS and Call of Duty, maybe? Admittedly, I don't think I got it right (not sure if anyone did), but it was something. Actually, there were about five incarnations of the thing, and everyone was meant to suppose it'd been issued for a relatively long time, so all the games from the 'revered' game series were presented to the audience in form of some special (aka 'COLLEKTORS') edition including each game + extras (OST, walpapers, artwork and even a War of Stels game which had never been actually released!!!1). Every game was in a mixed genre (like visual novel + shooter + even racing) and pretentious in a particular way (featuring TAUT INTRIGUING STORY WITH BRAINBLOWING PLOT TWISTS, STUNNING PIXEL ART GRAPHICS, INSANE STUNTS ON THE YAMAHA STUNT BIKE, HOT CHASES ON A SNOWMOBILE AND BY FOOT etc). I wish I were skilful at speaking English enough to recount how much hilarious a description either of them had (they're in Russian).

A new build will be up later today. I've added sound, a new obstacle, and the ability to save and load progress, as well as a handful of new levels. Just gotta take a bit of a break before putting the finishing touches on it.

I'll admit up front though, the music is a placeholder from Incompetech. It usually takes me several days of trial-and-error to come up with a song that doesn't make my ears bleed, and that song was the only real roadblock to releasing this upcoming version.

E: It's here.

Between the
Snaggler
and
Now You See It,

I sometimes end up walking into the pit cause of level-transition.
If you want that sort of thing- it's better to custom build it as an obstacle (fake floors?)

Otherwise I haven't found it to be a problem with the other levels though.

Also- I could go for a really sweet legs in the air animation pose!

I know you probably want to program, but if not- You can use premade stuff.

I find that using premade stuff tends to give less fine control, which I dislike. I'm having fun creating most everything by hand, only borrowing stuff that I absolutely cannot create myself in a reasonable amount of time (like the music).

I've played with Unity's 2D tools, but IMO they're not really useful right now. It's more work to do essentially the same sort of thing that I'm doing now with Game Maker. I hear that more 2D functionality is on the list for the next couple of releases though, so maybe. :P

Thanks for mentioning the problem with going between levels. I'm planning to add a screen between levels so that it's less jarring, maybe with a scoring system like Angry Birds with three possible ranks for each level.
