First Wonder (Giants Citizen Kabuto successor -Kickstarter)
« on: September 05, 2015, 11:43:24 pm »

So hey, I missed the start of this thing but I see it now so here it is: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/roguerocket/first-wonder

First Wonder is a spiritual successor to Giants Citizen Kabuto (and MDK) by Rogue Rocket games.  You can see early examples of gameplay in the vid as well (Cargonauts and boosters/modules use, and Monstro using the environment), so its not just all concept art and talking: go watch the vid.

(Video of Giants: Citizen Kabuto and discussion by TotalBiscuit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvxDF83apCQ )

Edit: Old below

So Rogue Rocket games, which consists of the guys that made Giants Citizen Kabuto.... are working on a spiritual successor to it.  And apparently, they were at PAX showing off early assets/gameplay:

Information is pretty sparse right now, but theres a kickstarter planned pretty soon, like in next month or so (or maybe they just want to announce the starting time soon? I'm not sure of the wording).  Giants Citizen Kabuto was a damn good game and I would really love to see a successor/sequel/whatever they call these things now- hoping to hell its doesn't get fucked up somehow.

Giants is easily one of my top ten games, and I am really happy that a spiritual sequel is being made. The music from Giants in the trailer was a nice touch, and really appealed to the old nostalgia goggles. I hope that this turns out to be as good as the original was, but as of yet, it is way too early to tell.

Oh man, Giants is one of my favorite childhood games (even though I never experienced its multiplayer aspect which was apparently its biggest thing), and I love that even now it's still fairly respected, and I've heard about this project semi-recently.

I'm looking forward to how that goes, although I hope that it's going to be 3-way as well like original game was, otherwise it's going to be...well, a spin on Evolve with a nostalgia factor to it, really.
But maybe that's just my cynicism speaking, so take it with a slight bit of salt just for safety.

Woah Giants was awesome! I'd love to see an updated version.
I have to say though, I feel that they may have released that a bit early...It looks pretty rubbish at the moment, and certainly doesn't inspire much confidence from me.

Apparently I missed the start of their kickstarter, ironically, but here it is (and OP updated: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/roguerocket/first-wonder )

So far looks like they haven't gotten much attention, guess a lot of other people missed it too.

To be honest, it was quite an ambitious KS. In my opinion they really should have made a much better video rather than saying 'here is a big thing that jumps and little things that jump - its like GCK!!!'
I really wanted this to do well, but as I wasn't confident enough myself to back it I can't blame others.

And I know I am in the minority...

But I honestly don't think Citizen Kabuto was really good. It successfully did four kinds of gameplay competently... but I never thought it excelled at any of them.

But then again I am a joyless pessimistic terrible human being who obviously hates all videogames.

I liked the original game. I liked a lot of things about the style, except for maybe the whole ~lol we're brittish~ humor thing, which was ok for the most part, just... Too brittish at times :v

The original definitely was unique in its time, though it had some issues due to its own custom engine and all at first (and its big issue was the high requirements and low sales).  Heres TotalBiscuit on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvxDF83apCQ

A lot of it is nostalgia, but I think the reason it was so good was that it did the four types of gameplay competently. This had pretty much never been done before that and there are still very few games that do manage it even remotely well.

It also was one of the first proper open map games - especially in terms of verticality, combining that with some pretty pretty awesome graphics/design and it was really awesome for it's time.

I'd love to see a successor, but it just seems as though FW was so quickly put together and was more of a 'I wonder if this will work' sort of pitch rather than a serious kickstarter

RIP

Not surprised at all. The reaction I saw to this reboot almost every time was, "GCK isn't a name I've heard in a decade. I think I had a friend who really liked it. Was it any good?"
Then everyone in the room would say, "I don't know if it was any good, I never played it myself. I recall it was well received, though."

Neither a numerous, nor enthusiastic enough fanbase to support a reboot.

I still have no idea what the game actually is.  None of the descriptions I've read seem to actually know what you do in the game.

It's been a while since I've played it, but from what I remember it's sort of an RTS/TPS hybrid that takes place in large, open maps. You play as a single character that typically builds a base and collects resources (animal things out in the wild) to grow your base and complete objectives. There's three factions, the marine guys, the elf guys, and the Kabuto whcih all paly differently. The elf guys I can't really remember how they play but they get a base as well, but when playing as the Kabuto you are basically the 'base' and you upgrade yourself by feeding off of aforementioned animal things running around.

A terrible description, but you can imagine how an RTS game played as a third person shooter on large, fairly open maps (you get jetpacks/super jumps for verticality too) with asymmetric 'factions' can be quite innovative for the time it was released.
