Could we envision aniconism, or deities who don't want to be depicted?

You will still get associations with a god, even if the god insists on having no description.  This creates a vacuum so that after a few thousand years you get oddball associations like nine-armed candelabras, brightly painted eggs, and reindeer with bright red noses.
