I hate preordering as much as every other sensible person, but I feel that many games already do this in terms of having sort of deluxe/legendary/whatever editions. I don't like it, but I don't think it's that different from what other people are doing, it's just that Deus Ex has been abit more blatant with it.

One thing I do really, really hate though is the idea that you'll unlock more tiers if more people preorder, and that if loads order it'll come out early. That just seems a bit too blackmail-y as it's basically holding the game/content hostage unless they get more preorders.

I do not get the outrage. It's all been done before.

XCOM had the tiered pre-order system on steam, even! And a ton of games have the "play early" preorder bonus.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Yeah, I just think Deus Ex was the first to be so explicit about it and have the sort of kickstarter-esque 'unlockable tiers'. My problem with it is just that they're basically saying that if not enough people pre-order, they'll withhold content. That to me seems a bit like blackmail.

As explained in this video, you don't even get everything even if you do preorder. Stuff in each tier is exclusive to the other stuff in that tier.

one thing if indies do it. totally different matter if majors try to screw us with this and then feed us with early access shit.
anyway, im sure we will get the same we got with all DE followups so far: a short, linear game witch will barely run at release (tho, this time it will be ok cause "early access") with stupidified "rpg elements", pseudo choices and astonishing graphics.
so exited. about to order a gold package.

I truly thought Deus EX: HR was a great game. It had it's faults, but it was one of the best 'commercial' games I've played in a long time. After watching the gameplay videos for this one I'm very excited about it - I got the sense they really learned from their past mistakes and have improved it in pretty much every way.

I am 100% that this preorder rubbish had nothing to do with the developers and would have just been some last minute cash grab by the production company. It's had quite a negative backlash, and that will get noticed.

A lot of the people who bought HR would like to disagree with you.

"Lot`s of people" bought Da Vinci Code and Taylor Swift`s records too.

DX:HR failed on two levels: meta - try and have a little think about how a sequel to one of the most innovative games ever, released a decade later is actually a step back in many aspects and at best more of (simplified) same. One of the best examples how mummified gaming industry have become and how gullible "gamers" are.

But even when you skip that point and concentrate on gameplay, it still fails. Two simple design decisions ruined this game - the stupid yanking to third person from first and removal of leaning mechanic. Former turn firefights a pain in the ass - when we forget of course that original was never really a shooter - and the latter makes sneaking impossible to enjoy. Unless you consider staring at motion scanner exciting, that is...but I could`ve as well be playing Snake on my Nokia emulator.

I really wanted to tried to enjoy it - gfx and general mood were just right...but I remember the original (plus similar Looking Glass Studios classics) - too well to waste my time on this iteration.

The third person sneaking and take down moves were just so crap to me and always kill my motivation when I give it another try. Obviously for the console crowd and breaks the immersion hard.

I do not get the outrage. It's all been done before.

So has bank robbery and so has eradicating life-threatening diseases. Precedence alone does not set morality or acceptableness. It was bad in those times too.

I liked Human Revolution, but I did feel it closer to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and Alpha Protocol than Deus Ex. Though I also would regard those games as somewhat spiritual successors to Deus Ex in a lot of aspects, so...

Oh god not one of those 'It's not as good as the original!' arguments...
Obviously it's different - it's 15 or so years later. Yeah HR had flaws - so does the original Deus Ex, but no one here is saying it is as good as or better than Deus Ex.

However I certainly enjoyed it, and I believe they COULD make one as good as the first one if they took the criticism to heart.

The problem with this argument is that XCOM's tiered pre-order system gave you Civ V for free.  Who's going to complain about that?
