Do tree branches and twigs prevent cave in?
« on: August 29, 2015, 12:52:53 pm »

I was trying to dam off part of a cavern lake by dropping a 2-z wall from the roof above. Strange thing is, all segments drop just fine except for the three, which seem to be supported by fungiwood twigs and branches (which don't even show as an icon, just with 'k'). Do twigs give support now?

Since the tree stands in the water, I can just cut it down.  Any way around this except for draining the whole lake?

Thanks!

Yes, even the thinnest of branches blocks the fall of a cave-in. I just had a case where the branches were so thin they weren't even displayed (branches later appeared when I lowered the water, though). If that blocked fall causes the wall to stop on a floor it would have crashed through it fuses with the floor and becomes supported even after the tree is blown away (namely the tree above).

There are two ways to get rid of trees in water (apart from draining the water around it and cutting the tree down):
1. Cut it down by building a floor or bridge out to it. Will work only on trees that have fellable branches reachable, though.
2. Use a ballista to shoot it away. The tree (and those behind it in the arrows' path) disappear completely, leaving holes in the water (those holes are filled if you disturb the water so waves appear). I had one odd case where I'd used a cave-in to drop a wall in the tile along a tree. When I blew the tree away a row of two or three tile at the top of the new wall vanished as well.

Note that magma is useless as a means to remove trees. There might be some superficial burning in some branches, but the tree and its branches will still be there to block any cave-in, and trees mess up magma obsidianization by being in the way so you can't obsidianize the tiles you want to reach.

Should we file a  bug report about this?
