Butcher shop barely works...
« on: August 25, 2015, 03:14:04 am »

is it just me or will the butcher shop not take any animals unless you
a. order the animal to be butchered
b. a hunter takes the animal to the butcher shop?

currently a dingo made it into my courtyard and was slain, now i have a fresh dingo corpse laying 1 zlevel above my butcher shop... is there anything im doing wrong?

Dwarf fortress Mode discussion.

Also, yes, it has to be close enough to the butcher's shop, around 40 tiles max, if I remember correctly. Except you can have a tame animal butchered anywhere, it should be automatic if you assign it to be butchered.

RE: Dingo corpse: try dumping it near the butcher's shop, or building a butcher shop in your courtyard. If the corpse is rotten, or mutilated, I think, this will not work anyway.

The first thing you did wrong was posting it here instead of here, in the fortress mode section.

I forget if there was a trick to get creatures butchered after having them killed.

It's funny because it's really easy to butcher in adventure mode, just open the actions menu and select the corpse.

I strongly disagree with max. This IS an appropriate place to ask questions.

The reason is probably that you haven't changed the refuse collection settings, so anything killed outdoors is not moved to the refuse stockpile.
'o'-'r'-'o' will change the settings so the dorfs will collect dead animals outside. The bodies will then be hauled to the refuse stockpile, and then a new order will be generated to butcher the corpse, which will happen automatically unless you have turned off the auto butcher workshop setting.

Edit:
Obviously, you'll need a refuse stockpile for the dorfs to haul the corpse there. It may be distance dependent such that the refuse stockpile has to be sufficiently close to the butchery, and it might be that bodies can be hauled directly to the butchery without a refuse stockpile if close enough, but I can't say whether that works. Dorfs haul stuff from the deepest caverns to the refuse stockpile to then get butchered properly.
When you order tame animals to be butchered they are led to the butchery and butchered there, as opposed to a dead body being hauled around.
Butchers will butcher skeletons to get bones and skulls for crafts, but I'm unsure whether rotting bodies are butchered right away, or if the butcher waits until the spoiled meat has rotted away.
