militia not attacking: no reachable valid target (0.40.23)

I read earlier about a bug where the military just refuses to fight, but I thought it was fixed in an update.

I'm currently under siege, and have three squads engaging them. I ordered them to station in a corridor the gobs where going to take, and strange enough my dwarfs didn't charge as soon as the first one rounded the corner. Then, the goblins engaged and my men just stood there. I changed the order from station to kill, but that also didn't help. I tried saving/loading and deactivating my "inside" burrow, but that doesn't seem to help.

Some of my soldiers have "no reachable target", but others have "kill" and they also just stand there:



The combat log is full of entries like this, with the gobs endlessly trying to hurt my steel-clad sloths and no hitting back:



Any idea what I can do to dispatch this vile force of darkness?

No real idea. Upgrading to 0.40.24 is probably harmless, but probably won't solve the problem either (I would still recommend upgrading, though).

You might try to station at a different location, as well as relieve them of duty. You might also try to select a single enemy to kill to see if that brings them out of their meditation.
If you can get them to move you should be able to lead the enemy to some traps (if you have any), or get them in the sights of a ballista.
If you've got crossbow suiciders you might want to primarily lead the enemy to your death seekers who'd then should be locked up inside a fortification endowed building, or otherwise release them to their probable death. You might also wait until the gobbos have fainted from exertion, in which case you could be lucky enough to only lose a few suiciders to gobbos waking up while whacked on with x-bows.
Turtling while getting a minimum amount of vermin inside might be another alternative.

Thanks, I didn't even know there was a .24.

In any case, it helped, and my swordmaster swiftly ended the siege by, ehm, he "scratching the The Goblin Maceman in the throat and the injured part is torn apart!". Why do you even need your masterwork steel sword? :)

5 of my brave-but-not-so-proactive dwarves got hurt but I think they'll all be fine. At least my rutherer soap will be put to good use :)

Congratulations, and may your neighbors bring you more gifts (Mmmm, those precious loincloths) and excitement!

And, for the latest version, the top of the page (the news part) has a link stating the latest number;)

Since that's one of the bullet-point bug-fixes in v0.40.24, it should indeed solve the problem:

Heh :).

Thanks for pointing this out. No I just need to convince the goblins to send more soldiers. I embarked near a tower as well but haven't heard from them yet, but at least I'm getting sieges this game.

A little warning for your move to 40.24 , there's a bug that had been present in previous 40.x versions but that now will crash the game in 40.24 :

Basically if you build anything (floor, wall, etc..)  on a growing tree or part of a tree (tree being above or under ground) -> crash, while previous 40.x it only made the trees disappear.
