Is goblonite still a thing? I only seldom read about it. Either sieges are as rare as well or it just isn't worth the (emotional) effort to collect it anymore.

Actually I just finished my giant entrance atom smasher. Goblins get trapped in it, the milita goes in, messes everything up, goes back to their daily routines and the goblin remains get smashed, including the goblonite.

Anyone hase the same feelings about goblonite?

Goblinite was replaced with dwarfite, after goblin sieges were replaced with zombie sieges.

I don't know, but Violentlash has based its complete iron and steel industry on goblin iron imports. So far I got a few thousand bars of metal from the things they brought me so willingly. Copper, Bronze, Silver, Iron... I only mined out one small hematite vein in 40+ years and all my melee dwarves (34, I think) got full steel armor and weapons (but not shields, I don't care about shields being top quality material) - and I still got 700 or 800 bars of steel lying around, as well as having some unused armor and weapons stockpiled.

And for clothing ... I did have to finally make some clothing of my own fortress after there had been fewer sieges in the last years. Before that I ran for several years without having to make anything. But I'd still not consider it very reliable; my dwarves were getting annoyed about wearing old cloths often.

Then again, I have three seperate Goblin entities in reach of my fortress, I can't tell if all three actually send sieges or not, but I have been getting sieges quite regularly. Though they have not been a challenge for a long time...

I got my first shipment of goblonite at the end of my Bronzeweaver's second year.  It wasn't much, but the price was right.

I still value it if the shipment arrives and I'm in a nonferrous area, but by the time the goblins get it together enough to send anyone, I usually have all the iron I need from the caravans.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

So it is still considered a reliable source, I see. How do you cope with the emotional shock of some dwarfs (Horror witnessing death)? After the last delivery of Goblonite some of my Dwarfs are in permanent vacation.

The first sieges were the worst, but quick disposal of the corpses via a drop shaft to magma or an atom smasher before allowing anything else to be carried off the battlefield does help. The faster its gone, the less they will care about it it feels like, but you need to have good rooms and such to also counter the bad thoughts.

In Violentlash the "horrified" is just a minor thing by now, nothing to really worry about it seems like. The military is already hardened against such thoughts by all the fights they had. A much bigger problem for me is the "feeling vengeful for joining conflict" - this has lead to some extreme stress increases even though I have quite some good value bedrooms and a very much legendary dining hall. It is less a problem with the quickly-dealt-with goblin sieges and more a problem of cavern exploration though.

But still, keep the weak from "refuse hauling" if they get too stressed out. If you have few dwarves and many corpses, you need to focus on having short corpse-hauling routes, now that Violentlash has ~100 haulers available a siege is quickly disposed of.
Just always remember: never leave corpses lying around. Every time they see them, they get a very bad thought. And if a necromancer wanders in the fun starts all over again.

Meh... I still believe in Goblin Claus, and in Goblin Christmas! I'm also a faithful believer of Elf/Human Christmas too!

I try to embark in metal free environments in metal poor worlds to rely exclusively on Goblinite. I also make heavy use of cage traps and prisoner stripping to cut down on corpse hauling, but there is some slaughter on pitting (into magma) as some break free. Also, goblins, elves, and undead are the only sources of underwear.

das pretty hot

But yeah, sieges are rare in DF2014. Prepare for some early shipments and then a bit of a hiatus, focus more on getting some cage traps rather than outfitting.
