Wasn't me. Most of the fort has been inexpertly engraved by a horde of unskilled engravers. I reassigned the labors in the hopes of getting actual skilled dwarves doing important tasks.

I'm creating new, focused QSPs for each industry, if it helps.

Brief, out-of-character précis of summer and autumn (this fort is exhausting):

Fortress cleanup continues. Things are finally getting organized after months of hauling from the half-dozen huge catch-all stockpiles.

Steel smelting has begun in earnest, as has armorer/weaponsmith training--it’ll take quite a while before they start cranking out usable gear,  but at least the process has started.

Turns out all the cats in the fort were caged, so there were vermin everywhere. I also put all the fort birds in a lockable room with some nestboxen.

The dwarven caravan came, so I was able to get us some seeds, thank goodness. I also got various raw materials we’re low on, such as cloth and leather, so some necessary industries could get back on their feet. Sadly, I wasn’t able to trade away all of the heavy rock pots (seriously? We have plenty of wood for wood pots), because it turns out depot access was blocked by some walls constructed over the bottom-most ramps, so food hauling will be slow until someone can get rid of those.

I started making a magma dump atop the volcano, but work was interrupted by a Forgotten Beast showing up down in the unsecured cavern (access to which is apparently via a mineshaft at the north of the map--I started digging down from a large underground quarry I found).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Beast has been hanging out in the ruined hospital for a while; therefore, I’m digging a crush-'em trap for it, which hopefully will be finished by the end of winter. As a bonus, I'll be able to construct a more secure hospital, nearer the fort, as well more secure cavern access (and hopefully will have a chance to secure the surface entrance).

Sadly, it looks like not even a single floor of the grand Tower will be finished by the end of my year. Anyone who wants to pick it up should feel free; the idea I had was for it to be a free-standing pillar held aloft by a single tile at the top, reaching from the top of the sky down to the lowest cavern.

I've started using some of the copious stock of bones Rampartclasped has lying around to create bone crafts; they should make good trade goods if we ever run out of ragged clothes.

Oh, I've also been building cages and mechanisms, so whoever goes next should be able to put up cage traps and start training surface/cavern creatures.

Rock pots aren't all that heavy; some are actually lighter than wooden barrels.

Ah, but wood pots are ¼ the weight a barrel made of the same material would be!

Winter is finished. Smithing and crafting continues.

Someone made an artifact granite crown:

Spoiler: Soshthebil (click to show/hide)

Just after I crushed our first resident Forgotten Beast under a collapsing floor, another one showed up.

This one breathes fire.

Spoiler: Burn, baby, burn! (click to show/hide)

So there you have it. We have food and drink, for now, and more growing/to be planted when its season rolls around. Every industry has quantum stockpiles fed by small, normal stockpiles, and all furniture, blocks and finished goods are going to the revitalized original quantum stockpile. The dorfs are working on making steel bars, and I've been abusing conservation of matter to train the armorer and weaponsmith while increasing our available steel--so you should be able to outfit a militia soon, to take care of that firebreathing tick.

To the next overseer: good luck. The save is here if you have tar and/or 7zip available, or (larger download) here if you prefer zip.

Nearly finished a season now, but I have a problem- whenever i forge a weapon, it is automatically designated to melt.
How do I stop it?

Check the stock section, and make sure the entire weapon category isn't set to melt. Not sure that's the problem but maybe it'll help?

Get rid of the automelt stockpile by the forges, if you want. It's set to melt non-masterwork items--by forging battle axes, leggings, buckets and musical instruments, you can train our smiths, while increasing our steel stocks (in the case of axes and leggings) or breaking even (in the case of buckets and instruments).

Trapcomps work even better for that, btw. I personally like doing so with giant axe blades.

True, they give a higher return than battle axes. The reason I chose axes was so that any early masterpieces could be immediately used by a fledgling military. Sadly, leggings (like greaves, only lousy; they're the maces of armor!) are the only armor with that property, so early masterpieces should probably just be sold instead.

Does anyone know how to unblock the caverns?
(nearly finished will post save in a few hours)

They're not blocked; the entrance is at the far north of the map, apparently. If you've had the surface open, I'm surprised the new forgotten beast down there (I managed to crush one to death) hasn't pathed up to you yet. If you've been working on the surface, I'd actually make it a priority to make that staircase sealable.
