You can take the second turn, if you like.

That's fine.

Grabbed the save, getting started now.

Rampartclasped, Spring of year 201

1st Granite

The fortress has now been passed to its second overseer. Upon loading the save, I notice large quantities of material sitting exposed on the surface for no discernible reason.

Cut logs sit next to iron anvils and <pig tail fiber cloth>. Step one should be moving all of this inside into some kind of ridiculous stockpile area.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The current stockpile isn't nearly ridiculous enough.

2nd Granite

Three kobold thieves approach the fort. With no dwarf available for a military, I decide to just let them take whatever they want. It doesn't matter that much.

14th Granite

This texture pack, whatever it is, looks weird. Especially to a player who never uses anything besides Phoebus.

20th Granite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In Rampartclasped, whatever cannot be worked shall be destroyed.

There's a hill here.

Don't worry, we can fix that.

2nd Slate

To reduce lag, I have introduced the Absolute Animal Caging policy. All animals will be stuffed in a single cage and stuck in a corner somewhere.

It's brilliant!

17th Slate

Some migrants arrive.

25th Slate

A fish cleaner is taken by a fey mood. They claim a Craftsdwarf's Workshop.

25th Felsite

Rampartclasped now possesses a new artifact.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Truly it is the most useful artifact ever seen in any dwarven fortress. It shall be celebrated for thousands of years as the ultimate pinnacle of craftsdwarfship, before it is finally surpassed in the year 4557 by a human-made *orthoclase scepter*.

28th Felsite

The incomplete and decidedly unridiculous stockpiles have been supplemented by the invention of the "wooden bin". This is now the height of dwarven storage technology - not counting the quantum stockpile, of course.

You know that the stockpile is a quantum one already, right? Self-managing minecart-based, to be precise.

Oh yeah, and the piles of crap are from caravans being terrified by capybara man corpses, afaik.

Nice, nice! Just a note from previous succession games...since you're using a graphics set, don't forget to revert to text when you upload the save.

Also gonna point out that those bins are gonna bite us in the ass later.

EDIT: And that I don't use a texture pack.

Rampartclasped, summer - winter of year 201

3rd Hematite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hello again. Yes, please, help yourself. What happened to your friends? Ah, no matter, no matter. We have a large selection of fine items here...

5th Hematite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh, you did bring friends. Five of them. Armed with crossbows.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So... what? Are you guys a hunting party? Well, we apparently have some falcons. Enjoy your hunt.

What do you mean, "surrender to your new goblin overlords?" You know, you don't seem very nice. I'm afraid I'm going to have to close the gate in your faces.

Assuming, that is, that there is actually a lever around here somewhere.

...

Yeah, I don't see one anywhere.

Time to do some emergency construction.

6th Hematite

A couple walls have been put up very quickly indeed. The goblins are now (ideally) blocked off from most of the fortress, along with some haulers going to collect some of the surface wood.

Their sacrifice shall not be in vain. They will be remembered. Probably.

7th Hematite

The goblins are reinforced by another crossbowgoblin. They continue their slaughter of anything that moves on the surface.

8th Hematite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The stockpiles have been successfully expanded. Haulers continue to fill them with random trash from around the fortress.

12th Hematite

The cancellation spam is impressive. Urist McHauler cancels Haul: job item inaccessible. Over and over and over.

20th Hematite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Wow. Well, that explains why there has been zero progress on the Memorial Hall.

23rd Hematite

It's probably more important to build some new farms somewhere. When the backlog of hauling work is finished, work will start on that.

5th Malachite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ladies and gentledwarfs, we have a new farm.

*celebration*

17th Malachite

The dwarves that somehow survive on the surface despite the goblin ambush squad have now engaged into experiments to find out what new and interesting cancellation spam they can make.

22nd Malachite

Some migrants arrive on the surface. They will no doubt be eaten by goblins soon.

What do you mean, "there are no goblins"? I saw them on the -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

- unit list.

What the hell?

(Did they turn into birds?)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What do you think you're doing? They're still out there!

That's insubordination, dammit!

1st Galena

I have been informed by several people that I am no longer allowed to make important command decisions. My actions are percieved to have almost starved the fortress for no reason - despite the fact that the goblin hunting party is still out there and has acquired a taste for dwarven flesh.

But what do I know, right?

In other news, someone took over the Magma Forge and started making crude drawings of metal bars and some kind of cloth.

We have both but they just shake their head and keep drawing.

I am concerned.

15th Galena

I must address this insubordination.

Construction begins on Project HOUL.

10th Limestone

The Hall Of Unlabeled Levers has finished construction.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Don't worry, I didn't also make multiple death traps as a part of Project HOUL.

Oh, by all means, don't take my word for it. I'm sure none of these levers are dangerous at all - you definitely won't drown the fortress in magma if you pull one. I do know that one connects to the entrance.

I'm not sure which one, though.

12th Limestone

A trade caravan arrives, and is promptly ignored.

Enjoy the walled-off trade depot, friends! Heh.

14th Limestone

The metalsmith with the unfulfilled mood went berserk today.

15th Limestone

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A group of random dwarves successfully punched their insane former friend in the head to death.

He was almost immediately interred in the graveyard on the bedroom level.

21st Limestone

Project ROSS begins.

25th Timber

Another strange mood!

3rd Moonstone

We now possess an artifact stone earring.

10th Opal

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Project ROSS, the Room Of Silver Statues, has been completed. This statue garden is truly legendary, and should give many happy thoughts to the dwarves.

Not that the insubordinate bastards deserve it.

I will now start engraving random things to entertain myself.

16th Opal

A Stonecrafter gave birth to a girl.

19th Opal

A Thresher gave birth to a girl.

20th Obsidian

It occurs to me that I will have to turn over authority soon.

Good riddance.

23rd Obsidian

An Engraver gave birth to a girl.

1st Granite, 202

Well then.

Good luck.

---

The save is here.

I have no idea about anything involving graphics sets beyond the setting in LNP that lets you choose one pre-world gen. I decided to err on the side of caution and leave it alone instead of messing something up and voiding the save or whatever it is that happens when you mess with important game files without knowing what you're doing.

Okay, I've begun in earnest now that my weekend's here. The day I took the save, I just couldn't get up the gumption to deal with the labor assignments--unskilled labors had been specialized (there was, like, a single cheesemaker, a single  shearer, a couple brewers and so forth), but *everybody* had tons of skilled labors--so it would've been ages before the fort saw anybody with any useful skills, and the fort would be overrun with low-quality goods if they didn't starve first (since unskilled planters were allowed to plant)  . Now that that's taken care of, everything's going swimmingly and I should, ideally, have the final report up tomorrow sometime.

Not sure if dying of old age is an honor or a shame for weaponmasters. On the one hand, it means they never got the opportunity to die in glorious battle. On the other hand, it means nothing could beat them in glorious battle.

Progress has been much slower than I’d hoped, but things are moving. I need to write up summer and then play autumn and winter; I should be able to pass on the save very soon.

Spoiler: Prologue (click to show/hide)

From the journal of Îton “escondidorf” Shetbêthled, Mechanic and Overseer (202 After a Time Before Time) of Rampartclasped

Spoiler: escondidorf (click to show/hide)

Spring

Today, I gathered together all the dwarves of the fortress together and explained to them that I was the new overseer. Surprisingly, everybody just took me at my word and stood, listening intently, while I gave them their new labor assignments. Most seemed relieved--after all, not everyone is cut out for skilled labor, and I did try to give people the work they wanted to do. Particularly happy was the marksdwarf Bëmbul “Taupe” Oslandalzat, who was finally allowed to hunt again after a year doing odd-jobs and trying, with limited success, to engrave the fortress walls.

Spoiler: Taupe (click to show/hide)

Others, such as Libash ‘tonnot the 98th’ Thîkutrazot, the newly assigned jeweler, were less than happy. “I don't know anything about gem-setting or gem-cutting!” he wailed. I explained that, unfortunately, neither did anyone else, so he was as good a candidate as anybody to learn the trade.

Spoiler: tonnot the 98th (click to show/hide)

When I'd given an assignment to the last of the crowd of dwarves who had assembled in the dining hall to hear me out, I immediately made for the kitchen. Priority one as overseer: no more raw plump helmets for dinner.

Spoiler: So hungry… (click to show/hide)

Next up was getting rid of the massive, completely disorganized, catch-all stockpiles that took up a whole floor; this space can be better used for workshops!

Spoiler: Well, it’s a start (click to show/hide)

While I was dealing with the stockpiles, one of the fort’s few experienced farmers approached me to explain that, because of the bumbling of the citydwarves who, despite never having so much as seen a farm, had previously been assigned to planting duty, we were nearly out of seeds, and had none left for several vital crops.

Spoiler: Look, ma, no seeds! (click to show/hide)

Fortunately, very soon after that disturbing revelation, a miner ran up, shouting that she'd struck a deep cavern. With any luck, it will hold seeds for the plants we lack.

Spoiler: Cavernous indeed (click to show/hide)

The cavern holds several magma-filled pits.

The depths of one of these were plumbed by a bold canine explorer, whom I have dubbed “Magma Laïka.” Just before he was incinerated at the bottom of the magma sea, he telepathically projected an amazing image into the mind of the local animal trainer: this site is home to raw adamantine! Praise the miners! Who’s a good puppy? It was him. Yes, it was.

At some point, the ghost of the late Mosus Sáreksibrek rose to haunt the fortress. The haunt hasn’t hurt anyone; mostly it just moves sadly from room to room, scaring superstitious workers.

Spoiler: Too spooky for me! (click to show/hide)

Most of the rest of this spring has been uneventful; I’ve been trying to get the fortress organized, and have begun work on the Great Tower of Rampartclasped. This looming edifice will one day span from the lowest caverns up into the skies!

Late in the season, I received word from several panicked citizens who screamed that Kogan Kûbukosram had been badly wounded in furious battle with a fearsome werechinchilla. Fortunately, Kogan managed to slay the beast before it could cause too much harm. Even better, Kogan was not cursed to assume the shape of the werechinchilla.

Unfortunately, Kogan will never again walk without crutches. Naturally, I immediately began work on a hospital and a rudimentary well.

The season ended well, at least. Fath Thobmozib created Nåzomîtat, a cassiterite mini-forge!
