well i could weaken that somewhat, perhaps it needs a source of power first? magic ^{(or essence)} is pumped in, light and heat come out.

Defense doesn't give tankyness, it is more like giving dodgyness. A tank would have Protection instead  .

If you're willing to reduce the numbers, recoil seems like an ideal trait. Attackers get half the damage they dish out coming right back at them. Should put a damper on violence.

The problem with anything that produces energy is that energy cannot be destroyed under normal circumstances. As the amount of energy in the universe rises, so does average temperature. Depending on the flow (i.e. how fast it produces), it would eventually destroy all matter, whether it be in milliseconds or milliards of years.

If it needs an external power source, it's hardly unlimited.

That'd work, but the amount of control required would probably increase the already high Essence cost. Can The Overbrain afford it? KJP only knows.
