Novices are not able to access higher level spells (safely).
But when you say that, are you talking about novices or those with novice affinity? Of course novices can't access higher level spells. Those with novice affinity, however, might be able to access those higher level spells safely after a few decades of study and practice.

It honestly just slipped my mind.

From what I understand (which is to say, complete assumption, I just don't really care enough to make it a major part of my plans) given the way KJP runs things and what seems most likely, Affinity basically sets a baseline, from which individuals can vary. It is likely Humans, for example, have more intermediate or advanced level Plasmurgy users than other races for two reasons; one, they're already novices so it's a bit easier to 'level up', as it were, and they might have more interest in it (since it's already there so why not?). It doesn't, on the other hand, mean that the best Plasmurgy user is a human necessarily, or that there aren't quite a few Plasmurgy users of other races, unless you restricted access to it when you made the magic.

But yes every race can learn any type of magic as far as I know, it's just that you don't have auto-access to it unless there's an affinity.

Speaking of teaching and learning and all, I need to test some stuff concerning that actually. Want to figure out if magic can be taught to just anyone(presuming they have the discipline/focus/yadda yadda yadda), or if it has to be partially a trait you're born with.

Hmmm...I want to price check the Thunderguns, but I know Andres would use the idea himself, earlier than I could, and it makes me sad. Maybe I'll wait until I find a way to make Runesmithing/Enchanting or whatever. Or just go Alchemy and make Helldust.

Yes, but so can anyone else?

How about I put it this way. Lets compare magic to a real-life skill, such as Math. Novice math would be counting. Anyone in the world can learn to count, if they put the effort into it. If you gave a race novice Math-affinity, that would mean they can all count from birth. Someone else can learn to count, if they have a different affinity or no affinity at all. The only difference is that one group is born being Novice math users.

Do you understand this simple concept now?

But yes every race can learn any type of magic as far as I know, it's just that you don't have auto-access to it unless there's an affinity.
But KJP said that novice affinity doesn't actually make people novices in that type of magic. If you made a type of magic where novice spells were world-shattering spells (doing so is technically possible), giving a race novice affinity won't automatically let the race perform those world-shattering spells.

Except those with novice affinity to math aren't able to count in the first place. That's what KJP explained. He said that affinity only gives them access to the ability to count, not actual ability. Since everyone - regardless of affinity - is able to gain the ability to count, affinity just seems kinda useless.

As none of our current magics are world-ending spells, it is safe to assume that it gives the majority of a race with a non-exotic affinity the ability to use Novice magic. This is just KJPs simple way to keep magic from being overpowered.

No, it pretty much does give them all the ability to count in this example. I am saying knowledge of math=knowledge of magic. The ability to count is what it gives them, using the knowledge of Math. Anyway, Novice level non-exocting affinities are free anyway, so what did you expect them to do? You get what you pay for, remember?

I think I figured it out! I've managed to decipher this mass of letters, spaces, and colons...
access : ability :: CON : STR
...and determined that it means:
Access = Constitution
Ability = Strength

So while someone with novice affinity in Supermancy will have great difficulty in casting a novice spell and won't get a bonus when trying to cast it, doing so won't burn them out.

EDIT:
The ability to count is what it gives them, using the knowledge of Math.
It doesn't. KJP stated that it doesn't give ability.
Affinities: It provides access, not ability.

Well I think that's more along the lines of 'there is no magic with earth-shattering novice spells; it's not novice at that point, period'. As well as being probably exotic.

Being able to do so, and having the knowledge of how to, are different things. It's like if you had Science as an affinity, or Weapon Design, and decided Weapon Design had the ability to make nukes as a novice level thing. Sure, they'll know how. But do they have the tools with which to do so? Anyone can learn how, after all, if they try hard enough. Affinity means the race knows how to automatically.

Also, Andres, it literally said that if an Angel tried to use it it would burn them out. So I think that in fact they would burn out.

$$$PRICECHECK
on innate sorcerous ability in a school of magic on the same scale as Affinity.  ((Quite literally.  D&D sorcerer.))

I think affinity works for magic as autism works for math.
It doesn't make them start with knowledge, but makes it easier for them to learn.

Though I'm mostly just guessing.

Autism doesn't have anything to do with math you dumbass.

Oi. Unnecessary tntey.

Also, Happy Demon, not a topic to be brought up lightly. Unnecessary comparison there, leaving aside anything to do with relevance.

Really? I thought it was one of the most direct correlations.
Is it limited to certain types? Since I thought mine was the reason I was better at math than most others.

Eh, anyway, I did wrong, I'm sorry.

You have autism huh, okay. But no, no type of autism is better at math. At all.
