Let's Play: Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy
« on: August 14, 2015, 06:35:30 pm »

Okay, this is probably done a bajillion times already, but I want to replay Ace Attorney (the first one, haven't played the others) and I might as well make an LP of it. I'm playing an iOS port, so no videos. Look up cutscenes if that bothers you.

: *gasp*... *gasp*...

And here we are greeted with the catastrophic consequence of letting a Proficient Misc. Object User in your apartment.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: I told her I have an uncontrollable urge to bludgeon anyone who make DF in-jokes!

: I can't get caught.... Not like this!

I do hate getting murdered...

Because God forbid you don't know who is actually guilty. They might as well just name them as Gill T. Mann and Ines Nocenti. It's not like this franchise is averse to punny names anyways.

At this point I had to restart a few times to get the screenshot of Gill checking out Ines' butt. As the game goes on there will be more missed shots. Don't worry, they don't tend to be important.

And I'll work on the rest. Figured I'd put these down first to start the thread off.

I only finished the first game, and watched an LP of the second game up to the second case.

It will be very fun when we reach the second game, then.

Seriously, some of these cases are insane.

: (Boy am I nervous!)
: Wright!

And here we meet Phoenix Wright's Chief, Mia Fey's breasts.

: Whew, I’m glad I made it on time.
: So, this is it… your first trial!
: I-I haven’t been this nervous since we did s-student trials back in high school!
: Well, it’s about time you got back into the swing of things, then!
: Yeah… I… I guess you’re right!

Wright is on animé mode today, judging from his stuttering. Gods, I forgot how much of a dweeb he was.

: Oh man, did I use to stutter that much?
: G-go b-back t-to your g-game!

: I’m sorry you had to come all the way down here today on my account…
: Well, I have to say Phoenix, I’m impressed!
: Not everyone takes on a murder trial right off the bat like this.

Which is surprising, because people here in Japanifornia loooooves murders.

: It says a lot about you… and your client as well.
: Um… thanks.
: Actually, it’s because I owe him a favor.
: A favor?
: You mean, you knew the defendant before this case?
: Yes.
: Actually, I kind of owe my current job to him.

Ines Nocenti is a mob boss, clearly. The guy who used to be the top of the class in Lawyer school “mysteriously” disappeared. On that day, the school lost a small statue.

: He’s one of the reasons I became an attorney.

Nah, but seriously, this gets explained later and it’s actually kind of cute.

: Well, that’s news to me!
: I want to help him out any way I can!
: I just… really want to help him. I owe him that much.

: (My life, everything, it’s all over!)
: Isn’t that your client screaming over there?
: Yeah… that’s him.
: (Death! Despair! Ohhhh!)
: (I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna die!!!)
: It sounds like he wants to die…
: Um, yeah. *sigh*

And here we meet Ine- I mean Larry Butz.

: Hey. Hey there, Larry.

: Gimme the death sentence! I ain’t afraid to die!

Sorry about the silly face that I’m using for his speech right now. I really don’t want to skip ahead to the part where he starts talking again.

: What!? What’s wrong, Larry?
: Oh, it’s all over… I… I’m finished. Finished!
: I can’t live in a world without her! I can’t!
: Who… who took her away from me, Nick? Who did this!?
: Aww, Nick, ya gotta tell me! Who took my baby away!?

He’s actually making the crying face, but again, EFFORT.

: (The newspapers say it was you...)

Or Gyakuten Saiban, if you’re playing the Japanese version. This game is one of the few that actually took the term “localization” literally. They transplanted the entire setting from Japan to the USA. In the first game, this worked pretty well. In the rest, the Japanese culture starts to seep through.

: Here’s the story:
: About how my life got flipped upside do- I mean-
: My first case is a fairly simple one.

: The guy they arrested was the unlucky sap dating her:
: Larry Butz… my best friend since grade school.
: Our school had a saying: “When something smells, it’s usally the Butz”.

Classy.

: In the 23 years I’ve known him, it’s usually been true.

Wright is in his late twenties, I think. I forgot his exact age in the first game. He looks exactly the same as he gets older, although he does get stockier in Trials and Tribulations from what I’ve seen

: He has a knack for getting himself in trouble.
: One thing I can say though: it’s usually not his fault. He just has terrible luck.
: But I know better than anyone, that he’s a good guy at heart.
: That and I owe him one. Which is why I took the case… to clear his name..
: And that’s just what I’m going to do!

And so here begins the game for real.

Oh man, this is going to be good. Love the Ace Attorney games.

He's 24 in the first game, by the way. Then he progresses year-by-year until he jumps to 33 in the fourth game.

PTW, this looks great.

Apparently the IRL Japanese trial system got a 99% conviction rate. I hope you can do better.

99% conviction rate, hm? Good thing we are in this UNITED STATES OF DEFINITELY AMERICA.

: I hope that name is real.

Dammit Wright, they can smell fear!

: Ahem.
: Mr Wright?
: This is your first trial, is it not?
: Y-yes, Your Honor. I'm, um, a little nervous.
: Your conduct during this trial will decide the fate of your client.
: Murder is a serious charge. For your client's sake, I hope you can control your nerves.

Yelling and desk-slamming Wright is always better than stuttering Wright.

: Thank... thank you, Your Honor.
: ...
: Mr. Wright, given the circumstances...

Oh no...

: I think we should have a test to ascertain your readiness.

It's quiz time! Wright seriously doesn't remember these things in his first trial. In the second game, at least he has an excuse in term of blunt force trauma.

: Yes, Your Honor.
: (Gulp… Hands shaking… Eyesight… fading…)
: The test will consist of a few simple questions. Answer them clearly and concisely.

: Um… the defendant… is me, right?

I’m taking these meandering paths for now, because they’re funny. Later on in the trial we will not be able to afford to do so.

: You’re his lawyer!

: This is no laughing matter!
: You did pass the bar, didn’t you?
: Sorry, I couldn’t hear your answer. I’ll ask once more.

: The, um, defendant? That’s… er… Mia Fey?
: Wrong, Wright. Look, I have to leave.
: I have to go home. I’m… I’m expecting a delivery.

The Chief can’t bear to witness this trainwreck any longer. And the trial hasn’t even started!

: Aw, c’mon Chief. There’s no need to be going so soon, is there?
: Wright!
: Listen: the defendant is the one on trial--your client!
: I mean, that’s about as basic as you can get!
: (I put my foot in it this time! I’ve got to relax!)
: Sorry, I couldn’t hear your answer. I’ll ask once more.

Okay, I’m going to stop ribbing on Wright now and get on with the trial.

: The defendant? Well, that’s Larry Butz, Your Honor.
: Correct.
: Just keep your wits about you and you’ll do fine.
: Next question:
: This is a murder trial. Tell me, what’s the victim’s name?
: (Whew, I know this one! Glad I read the case report cover to cover so many times.)
: (It’s… wait… Uh-oh!)

: You don’t even know the victim’s name!?
: Oh, the victim! O-Of course I know the victim’s name!
: I, um, just forgot. … Temporarily.
: I think I feel a migraine coming on.
: Look, the defendant’s name is listed in the Court Record.
: Just touch the Court Record button to check it at anytime, okay?
: Remember to check it often. Do it for me, please. I’m begging you.

The Court Record is a very useful tool, especially later in the game.

I don’t have the heart to meander here, since Mia Fey had suffered so much at the hand of this LP already.

: Correct.
: Now, tell me, what was the cause of death?

: She was struck once, by a blunt object.
: Correct.
: You’ve answered all my questions. I see no reason why we shouldn’t proceed.
: You seem much more relaxed, Mr. Wright. Good for you.
: Thank you, Your Honor. (Because I don’t FEEL relaxed, that’s for sure.)
: Well, then, let us proceed with the trial.
: First, a question for the prosecution. Mr. Payne?
: Yes, Your Honor?
: As Mr. Wright just told us, the victim was struck with a blunt object,
: Would you explain to the court just what that “object” was?

: It was found lying on the floor, next to the victim.

Japanifornian criminals are so intelligent, don’t you think?

: I see… the court accepts it into evidence.

: Wright…
: Be sure to pay attention to any evidence added during the trial.
:That evidence is the only ammunition you have in court.
: Touch the Court Record button to check the Court Record frequently.

WrightXCourt Record OTP.

: Mr. Payne, the prosecution may call its first witness.
: The prosecution calls the defendant, Mr. Butz, to the stand.
: Um, Chief, what do I do now?
: Pay attention. You don’t want to miss any information that might help your client’s case.
: You’ll get your chance to respond to the prosecution later, so be ready!
: Let’s just hope he doesn’t say anything… unfortunate.
: (Uh oh, Larry gets excited easily… this could be bad.)

Being Larry’s best friend, Phoenix knows how easily he gets excited. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

: Ahem.
: Mr. Butz. Is it not true that the victim had recently dumped you?
: Hey, watch it buddy!
: We were great together! We were Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra and Mark Anthony!
: (Um… didn’t they all die?)
: I wasn’t dumped! She just wasn’t taking my phone calls. Or seeing me… Ever.
: WHAT’S IT TO YOU, ANYWAY!?
: Mr. Butz, what you describe is generally what we mean by “dumped.”
: In fact, she had completely abandoned you… and was seeing other men!
: She had just returned from overseas with one of them the day before the murder!
: Whaddya mean, “one of them”!?
: Lies! All of it, lies! I don’t believe a word of it!

Hoo boy.

: Your Honor, the victim’s passport.

: According to this, she was in Paris until the day before she died.
: Hmm… Indeed, she appears to have returned the day before the murder.
: Dude… no way…
: The victim was a model, but did not have a large income.
: It appears that she had several “Sugar Daddies.”
: Daddies? Sugar?
: Yes. Older men, who gave her money and gifts.
: She took their money and used it to support her lifestyle.
: Duuude!
: We can clearly see what kind of woman this Ms. Stone was.

Woah there Payne.

: Tell me, Mr. Butz, what do you think of her now?
: Wright…

You know, if not for [SPOILER] I would make this a drinking game.

: I don’t think you want him to answer that question.

I honestly don’t remember what I chose last time. Choice time!
