I agree, but then we need to expand the rangers as well.

Well then why don't we do that as well? Recruiting more rangers would surely be a good thing.

That is what I mean. We should add your proposed hideouts, but at the same time we should expand the rangers. When our bowmen are trained enough we can send them to the barricade to supply ranged capabilities, while we can employ the rangers fully on homeland defense and guerrilla.

Alright, can I get a bit more to work with for this next turn?

get the rangers to build the proposed hideouts in the forest. Recruit more rangers to be able to properly use them.

Make stalwarts build better fortifications on the bridge area: taller walls, watch towers, possibly siege weapons if they are able. This should teach them to be restless.
Attach the training bowmen to the stalwarts. They will keep training at the bridge wall.

Get spears for the tool armed peasants we have in the castle.

buy at least some horses for our patrols. That way they will be able to call for help should something happen.

build some irrigation canals to help agriculture

That is all I have. Anyone else wants to add?

Also, what kind of animals do our peasants raise, if they raise any at all? I was thinking we could use hides from slaughtered animals for use in leather armor, plus a source of meat and other products depending on the animal (milk, cheese, etc. Maybe for use as a trade item with the tribe in the swamp, if not consumption?).

Battle for the Bridge: Briefing
Your expansion of the the rangers sees a new group of hunter arrive at the barricade before the battle, expanding your archer force.
A few days later you see a large force position itself to attack.
You see two companies form up with two catapults, and between rides about ten horsemen, the apparently leader carrying the largest banner, the rest with smaller ones (All riding brightly clothed steeds in Ladron colors. The main enemy for seems to have spears and shields, and a few scattered archers. They total ~50 foot ~10 cavalry
A secondary group of what looks to be a mix of farmers with slings and some much more professional looking pavise crossbowmen. ~25 slingers ~8-10 crossbowmen.
As you raise an alarm a crossbow bolt hits the palisade by one of your sentries, and some stones come rattling about you as the slingers begin to fire.
Your forces are as follows.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The terrain is simple, the bridge with barricade that you hold. Surrounding this on your side are light woods, and on the other side is a rather open plain, with no real cover other than a few dips in the ground. Out of bow shot is a small hill that the main enemy force is deployed on.

The enemy crossbows have advanced, they are in range, but the shots will be inaccurate, the slings advanced and are screening the crossbowmen, and takings shots as well.

I feel as though small stones at range would not do much more than bruising. I'd say have the archers fire a few volleys at the crossbowmen. Of course, it's up to my liege.

Edit: Which hill are they on?

They could break bones or crack a skull on a good hit.

They could break bones or crack a skull on a good hit.

And considering the sling operators are peasent farmers, how often is "a good hit?"

While that does sound pretty bad, it sounds less lethal than a stick with a pointy metal tip flying into your vital organs. Plus, the bolts could be, say, wrapped in oiled rags. Considering our palisade walls are made of wood... I am still in favor of targeting the crossbowman.

It seems to me that crossbowmen and slingers are quite close. At the edge of bow range, targeting the group is the best we can do. But i agree, prioritise crossbowmen.

Every time I get news of enemies, I feel that we wasted the first turns by doing only single small actions , leaving us far behind the enemy.  But as long as we are defending, we still have a chance.

Prioritize crossbowmen sure, but make sure our archers don't neglect the slingers, that many of them can certainly fire enough rocks to cause some casualties, and if they are farmers then they won't stick around long if they take too many casualties. And I reckon the Stalwarts should advance in cover near, but not right at the barricade, if those cavalry/infantry charge then we need them in position to fight. But they shouldn't be directly at the barricade in case the catapults start firing and to protect them from the enemy archers.
