Lots of Dizzy Flashes
« on: August 11, 2015, 11:45:08 pm »

So first I am going to the doctor on the 21st... so there

I am getting a lot of dizzy flashes lately sometimes constantly especially the more active I've been and especially when standing up.

I don't lose my balance but I am wondering likely causes.

I do have Asthma so it COULD be lack of oxygen...

Does your vision get the black fuzzies when you stand up quickly?

I know I had a similar thing for quite some time, and it was actually because my blood pressure was almost too low, meaning that when I stood up quickly inertia essentially made all the blood rush out of my head. It wasn't too big of a problem, and once I got a bit more stressed out it fixed itself as my blood pressure rose.

Beyond that not much to suggest except see what the doctor says about it, they almost certainly know more than anyone here does. :P

It could also be a hydration issue, you did mention that you've been more active lately. Pay attention to how much you drink every day, and look up the appropriate amount for a person of your sex and size. I was surprised to find I only drank about 2/3 of what I should have on a normal day, and maybe you will be too. It didn't really bother me until I started exercising every day, but you can be damn sure I was feeling it then.

Honestly though, this.

Well I will say that the dizziness is tied to my movement. Moving my head, even slightly, causes me to get sudden, intense, but short lived dizziness.

What do you mean by dizzy exactly: that you feel weak/about to faint OR that you feel that the room is spinning and your balance is compromised?

My head feels it... I feel dizzy and my head feels like it wants to sort of go down... Like fall... So probably similar to fainting.

But it feels like intense dizziness that doesn't last long enough to affect me too much (though I never pushed my luck...)

What you describe (weakness/faintness, particularily when standing up) sounds a lot like ortostatic hypotension. Everyone's blood pressure changes when they stand up. For some reason this is actually impacting you. Maybe you're experiencing lower blood pressures because of whatever reason. Until you get your appointment try standing up more slowly..

Just gonna note that it could also be... This thing with a really long name, which i've had once (and which is completely harmless if you disregard colliding with things). Good news about that is that it's easily cured, although you'd have to adjust your sleeping position for a few days afterwards. If it IS that, of course.

An important note, but how much you need to drink is hugely dependent upon what sort of conditions you are in, what you are eating, how much you sweat, and so forth to the point that in reality it's fairly impossible to find a true "average" amount you should be drinking. Check most good literature and the basic message instead is "drink enough so that you aren't thirsty, then drink somewhat slightly more after that".

I mean a person outside in the 120 degree dry-heat of Phoenix, Arizona that is mainly eating saltine crackers might on average need to be drinking a couple of liters of water or more every day. On the other hand a person who is in a cool, somewhat moist inside of a building that has been subsiding on mainly fruit might need virtually no water at all. It's a very individualized thing depending on your exact scenarios (though if you are changing them, such as exercising more or moving to a different temperature/humidity then yeah, your needs are going to change too).

Well I went to the doctor and she said that it was low blood pressure due to dehydration (well lack of liquids)

Yet I seem to keep coming down with it. I seem to be dehydrating a lot.

I'll see if drinking two giant glasses of water a day fixes it.

The body can in general only absorb ~200ml (~0.8 cups) of water per hour. If you drink significantly over that a couple of times a day, your body will just dump the excess - hopefully not via diarrhoea. It's probably better to aim to keep a water bottle on your person and drink a few mouthfuls every now and then.

Have you asked your doctor if it could be Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo ?

I have no idea where you read that but I'm pretty sure that fact is complete bull****. Our intestines can absorb a lot of water everyone can binge-drink up to a liter or two of water at once and not get diarrhea. Even higher volumes don't necessarily cause diarrhea. (water poisoning is another business)

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Hey, it was a very highly qualified paramedic that told me that. I tend to take them at their word, although he could be wrong.

It's also likely affected by whether or not you're already dehydrated when you drink.

Edit: also note I didn't say the only or even primary way your body dumps that excess is diarrhoea. If you feel a strong urge to micturate relatively shortly after drinking and your urine is clear, chances are you're technically over-hydrating.

'Absorb' is also possibly poor word choice, 'use' might be better. You can chug up to about a litre per hour, but it's really unnecessary.

It is just a weird state for me to be dehydrated, mostly because I am a thirsty guy.

Yet something clicked and all of a sudden I just don't feel very thirsty anymore.
