Why dont i ever get goblins in v0.40.24?

Ok, this is getting crazy. 25 worlds, no goblin. Seed with lots of goblins? I tried that. Got the same world, same civs, EXCEPT GOBLINS!!! Is this a bug? Please help. i didn't delete goblins by accident by the way.

What were the settings for the world? If it was made using standard world generation then pocket worlds, even with the maximum number of civs I think wouldn't end up with 5 civilizations, meaning something would get left out. The chances get higher the fewer civilizations there are. When there's less than 5 civilizations i just determines which type of civilization is placed randomly, and considering that by default the world will always place a dwarf civ, that means goblins could end up with a 1/4 chance of being placed if the world only has two civilizations. It would still be unlikely, but I don't know, there's not really enough information yet.

The short answer is obvious: You're doing something wrong!

As vjmdhzgr said, you need to describe what world generation you use to allow people to figure out what causes the problem. Various civs have requirements that have to be fulfilled for them to be able to exist, so if your world doesn't have any place where they can start out, they won't be there. The wiki probably has info on what the goblins require.
Your mentioning of the same world seems to indicate you use the same seed(s) for some parameter(s), which could explain why that particular world doesn't allow goblins.

Use basic worldgen. If there's still no goblins, something is seriously wrong.

I do large world long history, lots of civilizations and sites, lots of beastes, high savagery, and frequent ores.

- are you using a mod ? (mods may have changed goblins)
- have you edited the raws (you may have made something that prevent goblin spawning)
- are you using the regular DF or some starter pack thing ? (as it may have options you're using and prevent goblins to spawn)
- have you checked the legends to see if the gobs could have been wiped out ?
- during worldgen, have you disabled any option ? (by example setting no demons )

1. No mods.
2. No.
3. Regular DF
4. I don't know how to see if they've been wiped out but i can't find any civilizations of them.
5. Not that i know of.

How do you look for goblins? Have you looked at the generated world and noted there are no goblin sites, or have you chosen an embark and found no goblins are present? At the embark stage, you can bring up the neighbors tab and pan around over the world to see what neighbors you have at different locations (sorry if it's too basic a question, but we have no idea of what level your problem lies at).

And Robsoie is right in that disabling demons will block goblins, since they won't get any masters.

I dont think i disabled demons, but can you tell me how to renable it just in case? Also, i look for them by first going into legends and looking through the entitys, then going to the embark screen, go to neighbors screen and look round the map. I have tried advanced perimeters and still no goblins.

You can set the number of demon types in data\init\world_gen.txt. The parameter is called [DEMON_NUMBER:X], where X is the number, and 0 disables it.

With trying other generation parameters I actually intended to say to step back to a more basic level, such just a default generation (or a few of them) without any tweaking of anything. A longer history increases the risk of a race going extinct, and large number of mega beasts likewise increases the risk of them wiping civs out by destroying all their sites.

Another angle might be to redownload DF if there's something wrong there, possibly trying the Lazy Newb Pack (which is the one I'm using http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126076), which includes DF as well as a number of utilities (that you don't need to use, of course).

Searching on the embark screen sounds very tendiuos, legends viewer could be useful to count the goblins and tell you exactly where they are.

I'm guessing your problem is here. Lots of beasts can easily wipe out civilizations early on when they only have populations of around 100, and I imagine savagery could do that same. Long histories also result in more wars which can result in more civilizations getting wiped out. In my experience worlds like this generally end up with only goblins, and maybe a few human civs left after all others were wiped out by megabeasts, but I suppose it's possible that it's exclusively goblins getting picked on. From the description, I'm kind of surprised anything except goblins survived though, high savagery stops all civilizations except goblins from expanding, and goblins don't die of old age and have metal weapons meaning they end up with really high populations letting them survive megabeasts. Try lowering the savagery amount, I normally play with maximum megabeast numbers and don't end up with too many extinct civs, so the savagery is likely a factor.
