Amadou grew up on a suburb in sight of the Dakar space port, and as a child he dreamt of going to space and living in the Lǐ Qīngzhào Station, amidst the stars and fine art... Which, of course, would never happen to a slightly malnourished kid from a rough part of town; Lǐ Qīngzhào was a hub of high culture, and the very rich could afford to hire only the very best. Once Amadou was older, he confided to his parents that he'd still like to go to space, to travel far and see the world from a hatch on one of the ships they always saw ascending to the skies. His father promised him that if Amadou studied hard, he'd do anything necessary to make sure his son could go to college, and that would certainly help make the dream come true.
A pipe dream, possibly, but from then on, more from effort than real brilliance, Amadou became one of the school's best students. With his grades he would certainly make it into a good college, he could even do medicine - alas, regardless of his grades, he came to the conclusion that he wouldn't qualify well enough in the physical exams to go to space... but he was already mature enough to accept that, and good doctors were always needed. Even with his childhood dream behind him, he persevered.
In time, he did make it to Dakar's most prestigious Akras Presqu'île Medical College, and thrived. While no longer being the top of the class (such was the competition), a well-spoken, hard working, and humble student couldn't help but to make friends.
Tragedy struck during his second year: his father was killed in an accident; his mother had to take the full burden of his four brothers alone and not only couldn't afford to keep paying the tuitions, but in fact he'd have to quit his studies and start working to help the family. Still, he had an excellent reputation, and one of his teachers commented to one of his friends, one of the corporation's vice presidents, about the imminent loss of a good student to a situation that even a student loan wouldn't help.
That was actually a serendipity for Akras, since they were about to start looking for someone with Amadou's profile.
A couple of days later, a company agent conveyed him a offer: the Akras corp needed someone with a good mind and an academic background to test how hard was it to learn an experimental medical technique, quite legal, no ethical problems or anything, but still under research and very hush-hush. It was a paying job, an unique opportunity, and he'd still be able to take exams and graduate while helping his family...
Learning magic was indeed hard, harder even than medicine, and he had to do both; it'd be better to say that the word "hard" only barely scratched the effort. While Amadou was the only medical student he knew who could actually magically heal his patients, the company's local Chief Medical Officer told him that he was spending too much time with the books and was falling behind practice-wise. It was time to put what he had learned in practice or start losing the hard-earned theory, he said, and nobody gets more practice than...
...A combat medic?! Amadou still could hardly believe that he had actually signed those papers, but it had seemed the right thing to do, or so the CMO had told him, before they put him in uniform gave him a crash course in firearms.
All this because once upon a time, a long time ago, a boy dreamt of living amidst the stars and fine art...
