"You know, I used to be an engineer for the Thalmor. It was a different time back then; I was a young fool who had lived in Alinor for most of my life. That said, I never did understand my people's obsession with leaving Mundus; I mean, why bother? Life was good and to make it any better involved destroying the world...or at least that's how I understood that Thalmor stuff. I hear that when Crystal-Like-Law was still standing some altmer just became dragons...although I'm not so sure on that."
"Anyway, when the Great War was declared, I was drafted to serve in Lord Naarifin's army. Before I left, I heard all about our victories in Hammerfall and Western Cyrodiil; thought we'd have win the war by Hearthfire. Didn't quite work out as planned, as I soon discovered."
"I was assigned to engine construction; mostly trebuchets and ballistas although we did get a few of those nifty cannons from Hammerfall. Even got a few mages to help with the enchanting....Then the Emperor went and captured our commander. Suffice to say, most of my corp surrendered right there and then, even tearing down the siege engines we built. After the Concordant was signed, I decided to stay in Cyrodiil...the shame of surrendering wouldn't do me any favours back in Alinor and besides, I had a long life ahead of me. So after I resigned from the army, I went around offering my services as an engineer. As you can imagine, there were quite a few damaged structures from the war. To tell you the truth, more than a few employers thought I was a Thalmor spy and hell, I was even offered a stipend by the Thalmor to be one. Now, I was an engineer to the bone and didn't care too much for this spying business, so I just went on my merry way and continued with my business. One day, I get this message asking for a quote on fortifying this little estate out near Cheydinal. The message asked for quite a bit; thick walls, several ballistae, scorpions and hidden traps. Now, I wasn't completely sure on Imperial law, but I was pretty damn sure that making a private fortress was illegal. I sent him a quote anyway with a message conveying my beliefs. It came down to I think...200,000 Drakes as well as the crew needed to carry out the actual work."
"A few days later, a message arrived saying that he had gotten approval- even sent a copy with the message- and was very much willing to pay. I shrugged and went to meet my future employer. To cut a very long story short, he was a very old Argonian who happened to be a vampire of the Arcane bloodline. He'd moved into the area a few months ago during the War and had been at war with the local Cyrodiilic vampires ever since. Now, I had no problems with the leeches as long as they know how to remain civil, which this one did."
"Anyway, I started building his castle, all the while the damned bloodsuckers kept attacking. On one really bad night, one of them actually bit me. The boss didn't like that one bit and wasn't willing to let me get to a shrine to get cured; too dangerous he said. So he decided to bite me instead and make sure I became part of his brood rather than the Cyrodiilics'. Suffice to say, it wasn't a fun few years."
"Oh wait, you want the rest of the story? I'm a bit short on time now. I'll get back to you in a decade or two. I do have all of eternity to tell, as after all."
