Ice. We ran a scan, some of the asteroids had ice. We were going to get it, and we saw aliens.

The travel is by schmonventional. I say schmonventional because you don't actually have a top speed in space, you have delta-V. Which means something is different for how our craft works as compared to conventional engines.

And no, we really couldn't. It takes us almost an hour to get there in a space ship. Which is presumably many hundreds times faster than we are.

I think I need to make if I'm getting everything.

1. We never traveled anywhere. We’ve just been floating around.
2. The asteroids we currently in are the same one's since the beginning of the game.
3. The unknown water source is one hour away from us and we would get there without the use of FTL.

I guess we could spacewalk.

Edit: Is traveling 89 Kegar by FTL or conventional?

Thrusters. FTL is a direct jump to a new location.

Alright lets leave and get ice on the way. We will have to remove it by hand, yes?

You sure? You're using arbitrary distance, we'd be fine with you handwaving it. But if you say 'Thrusters' and we've got a top speed without friction to counter our acceleration...

Couldn't we have two people go out in the spacesuits to mine the water, have the ship wait a distance away from the asteroid (or, ya know, match it's velocity then cut thrusters, I still don't understand what method we're using for propulsion, as if it's not Newtonian physics I don't see how we'll ever be able to orbit anything or indeed be in a solar system without it flying away from us constantly), and come in when they've got a full airlock's worth or whatever, then repeat?

Is our water not a closed system? It really would have to be, otherwise we'd have chunks of ice where we are losing water. With the water system running we shouldn't even need 100 gallons for a crew this size because after we urinate it, the water system should just filter it and return it to the drinking water. The best way to make friends here is to drop the soap during shower time. Try it, I'm sure you'll love making friends like that!

It's not gonna be 100% efficient, and it takes time for it to filter. And we've been in cryo a long time. It's a closed system, but we have, what, twelve people? And seven gallons to share between them?

Plus, where does all the stuff that gets filtered go, do ya think? Has to be flushed occasionally somehow. It's probably why we don't have a full tank as it is. I mean, besides the water vapor we breathe out and sweat and all that sorta stuff that just goes into the air.

98-99% efficiency is still pretty efficient, don't get me wrong, but still. Seven gallons isn't gonna be enough to shower, and if you're suggesting twelve people in an enclosed area never take a shower and then have to ration out water between them, constantly, besides the difficulties it would create for the doctor in sanitizing everything without being allowed to make use of water (it can be done. It's just going to be difficult and time consuming and very hard to wash his hands sufficiently for surgery or the like).

But that's even assuming we use a fuel cell.

Also, people spill water, and odds are not all of that is gonna be able to returned to the system. It's all the miniscule losses that reduce efficiency. Moisture removal is also fairly power-intensive for the benefit it gives, and until the solar panels are online we need to conserve our power as much as possible, really.

I know all that, I'm just saying a several thousand gallon water tank is a little unnecessary. Seven is not enough, but I guess with showering 100 gallons may not be either. But several thousand is a lot of space that could have more !!fun!! stuff.

We're apparently a long-distance military craft, so it makes sense for us to have enough resources to survive a long, long time without stopping.

Also, it just came to mind... why did Helga wait a thousand years to wake us? Was whatever that forced us into our pods something that lasted that long a time?

It's one thousand. Not several. Though I also thought it said several, at first.

A thousand gallons seems like a reasonable amount, if you want to be sure of having a reserve, after all.

I say we get, say, a few hundred gallons of the stuff, before moving on, if we're gonna be using up fuel. Say four hundred. Everybody takes quick showers (by which I mean timed, with it shutting off the water if you take too long), and we try to require surgery only sparingly. Should be plenty.
