How exactly is the ship working? Like.. The thrusters should not need to keep being online to stay level with the asteroid. There is no friction in space. They should be capable of staying aligned with the roid indefinitely without any risk of collision.

Its collision risk is with other roids and aliens. Which, depending on the density of the field and all that stuff could be basically never or it could be every few hours since this is a large roid.

But we have shields up. Meaning aliens/small roids aren't an issue. Big roids should be easy enough to spot from hours away and a very slight tweak in trajectatory should make them fly right by us. Space is Big.

People tend to not realize how big it is.

Yes, Kevak, but we apparently also aren't using Newtonian physics. Stuff tends to have to be closer when you do that, or move at vastly greater speeds. The aliens are headed for us and for our route, and apparently we have to be very close to the asteroid to mine it, presumably so our shield covers it, and they can wait there.

Also, we aren't going hours away, and slight tweaks in trajectory add up to big changes in position. Cuz', ya know. Space. Large distances and all.

Why aren't we using Newtonian physics? Feels like it would make mining a lot simpler.

For precisely that reason, is my guess.

I mean, if it was a comet, it would make perfect sense. They even tend to have ice on/in them. Very dangerous, though.

Also, we don't have enough for two thousand. We can store one thousand gallons, maximum, and we are mining it by hand.

Technically it wouldn't be very hard to just get some distance, shoot the roid with a railgun, wait for the field of ice to disperse a bit, move into it, and then just snag a few chunks of ice inside the shield.

Its my understanding that we are using sci-fi physics because this is a forum game and not everyone can calculate trajectories and gravitational pulls while aliens are wiggling at them through space.

Also it sounds like things can move out of our shields from the inside (like bullets) and so we couldn't use our shields as an ice net. I'm not sure how shooting and collecting would go.

Mac drills to send it to Mac? :P

And Kevak, anything smaller than a sizable asteroid gets kept out by the shield. Plus, waste of ammo.

Although, Spiderking, in all honesty, we wouldn't need that much. It's already abstracted, movement at the moment wouldn't really need to be about that. It's just about delta-V. Sure, gravity might end up making a little difference, but that's just as easily abstracted.

Inertia, yo.

Makes transportation in space a lot easier.

I mean, right now I'm just looking for if I can.

But, if we don't have a winch and cables attached to the airlock or at least some part of the ship, or able to be used near the airlock, and/or if I don't have a harness securing me to the transport cable which I can use to guide on the way back, then we've got some badly fucked up military procedure/ship building design. Simply too useful not to have.
