Simply because of all the people making such a fuss about it. Most of you aren't even homosexual to begin with, and the whole thing (as in, "420 blaze it faggot") is a fucking meme. Kot, I agree with you there. That word is way too touchy and it's seemingly worse than calling someone 'gay' to their face. I used to go to a school where everyone was colloquially known as a fag (For reference, Farrer Mem. Ag. High School) where everyone was known as a 'Farrer Fag' It got laughed off. Internet-only thing, maybe? IDK

Not the very best places (4chan, though arguably even the most non-retarded and sane sections of it use it too), but, well, it also spills to real world a bit, as evidenced by your school. This word came so long road that in most cases it's not even used against actual homosexual people.
