Might still be worth signalling that on the bugtracker.

ok im actually not sure what the issue is - its running fine now even with war dogs....i am using the starter pack and fiddling around with some of DH hack so that might be it. Its running fine now most of the time but before i got windows 10 i dont remember having any crashes (i only played for a month though, im a noob)

once i figure out how to re-create the problem ill post on the bug tracker for sure

Try with the normal version of DF , not the "starter pack" to see if it's a bug with DF or with one of the content of the "starter pack" before reporting a bug (as Toady can't really do anything about mods or dfhack own codes) :
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

Apparently several people report crash while using that "starter pack" version of DF
So there's probably some of the custom settings/mods included in that pack that may be buggy and responsible of those crashes.

Had the exact same kind of crashes than you (in game and during backups) but those disappeared when I disabled 'Performance Tweaks' in LNP.

Mind you, this 'Performance Tweaks' did that too with earlier version (OS or DF) so check if you have this enabled.

Honestly I would revert back to your older Windows. Windows 10 has been causing a ton of compatibility issues across the board. Not just in DF, but in every other game I play. We need to wait for MS to update it more before upgrading like usual when a new Windows is released its good to wait 6 months to a year before upgrading.

Though I am definitely waiting to upgrade for general stability reasons, I think that DF itself should be fine in that environment.  Sure, its code is a ball of barbed wire, but it's a ball of barbed wire that sits on top of the OS.  DFHack causes a lot of strange communication between the executable and a dynamic library, so it's more likely to run afoul of MS's attempts at security.

In a nutshell, DF uses a single external library at runtime called SDL.  SDL is open-source, so some real die-hard fans made a replacement version of SDL with additional features like the ability to bring in additional plug-ins and execute scripts written in Lua or Ruby.

Library impersonation is a real vector for real malware, so it's not surprising that DFHack will occasionally bump into the guardrails.  In this case, it sounds like the problem is confined to one of the additional plug-ins that can be disabled separately.

Worth trying is the "legacy" version of DF if the SDL version is crashing for you :

I just bought a laptop with Win8. Df crashes constantly while in the custom embark screen. It might take 10 attempts to get an embark. Worldgen crashes often as well, but the game itself doesn't really crash all that much.

I don't know how much is in common with Win8 and Win10 that might affect DF or DFHack, but I'm playing on my home PC right now that has Win7 and no issues whatsoever. Like zero crashes in 3 days except an ingame CTD after 3 years. (With no saves :-(  )

Win10 has been pretty stable for me... quite comparable with Win7, which was my previous OS.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

Hello, I know this topic is quite old now, but that's the closest I found for my issue. I started DF around end 2016, but stoped for a long time. I think I was using PeridexisErrant Starter Pack.
I wanted to go back to it a few days ago, but here is the issue : When I start the .exe, the little window appears, but the game crashes instantly. I tried running it as an admin, but it didn't work.

Then, I downloaded Peridexis Pack again, but when I launch the Starter Pack .exe, it says : "INTERNAL ERROR: Cannot create temporary directory!"
I tried launching it as admin, but : The PC asks me if I want to let this program run on my PC. I say yes, and nothing happens, there is no error message and nothing launches.
I'm on Windows 10 and I already tried without my antivirus.

If someone has an idea, I would be really gratefull for any help.

Does the game work on it's own without any mods e.g. the starter pack, when you try to run it?

No, the default game doesn't work either, it crashes on start. ("Dwarf Fortress.exe does not respond")
