There was still disharmony. She shifted the fret a fly's-breath, and strummed again.

"A certainly unique method of complements, I do believe, but I'll not try not take offence.

Doomed men get a last meal, so it seems fair they'd get a few last words or a song. Wen-Li Dulcette the Wind-Tossed Blossom, doomed man. May I have yours? A moniker made-up only lsats for so long before it grates. Yours as well, if you may honour me, miss not-marshal.

...though I must ask that any leg-breaking is done as a last resort. It's a most unpleasant sound."

Sal steps back, seeing that he's not going to get fresh air until they stop, and tunes back into the conversation. He missed most of the words, but he got the gist of it. The prisoner's making him a deal, the warden's telling him not to take it. He absent-mindedly speaks to the warden, and, noticing that he's still holding his hat, sticks it back on his head.

"I wasn't planning on it, sir. I don't need the gold, and I definitely don't need the trouble. Sounds to me like everything's working like it should."

Sal taps his foot nervously as the train continues to run down the rails, impatient, and waiting for a chance to get some fresh air.

"Nice try Jun, but it ain't about the money. That's just a bonus." She wasn't a fan of any of the Houses - Empire bastards as they all were - but she wasn't about to brook this kind of lawlessness. It would only end up hurting the decent commonfolk who were trying to scrape out a living out here, in the West. She turned her attention to the sound of the woman's voice. "Vic Dyson. This one is Jun Jones, goes by 'Young Man Jones' now and then. If you want to play him a song feel free." She nodded to Sal in response to his words, then returned her attention to her ward.

There was still disharmony. She shifted the fret a fly's-breath, and strummed again.

"Jun Jones is my name, yes. My father, he was a fan of alliteration-it was easier to remember. The title I took for myself, on account of my good looks. You'd be surprised how many people tried to kill me over it. Heh. I suppose I'll never outlive that title, anyway, which is certainly a bright way to look at things...

Lady Wind Blossom, I am pleased to greet you, greatly pleased. Such a pleasant voice, you have. You bring comfort to a man soon to be dead, and if the Old Gods bear this act as justice or not (I have certain opinion on that score), that is a good thing. Anyways, might you play some of the lyrical poems of Loora Vol? Nor very original, I admit-but, I have always had a respect for the classics. I am sorry I have nothing to offer you as way of thanks-at least in my current position-but, you can take up any service charges with my Warden. It's only fair she take it out of my bounty, don't you agree?"

"Ahh, don't look so fidgety, friend. All is right and fair is fair. Everyone gets what they deserve, don't they? You know I was like you once, trying to stay out of trouble, keeping my head down, trying to be a good person...well, the straight life just wasn't for me. I suppose I could have chosen a long life of honest, backbreaking labor, or a short life at the barrel of a gun...well, I made my choices and here I sit. What can I say? It was a fun ride, while it lasted.

I do wonder what you'll choose, though."
He asks.

Wen-Li began to strum gently.

"That's quite a wide selection, though I haven't played that one in a while... hmmm."

A moment of fiddling with the guitar and she began playing gently, the tones soft and resonant.

"Down from the mountains,  a mournful call
Singing down over the plains
Through gentle breeze, on our ears does it fall
Drifting down like blossoms in rain...

The highly quizzical head of Immanuel Jade pokes out from his room, one hand on his hat to keep it from falling off as he brushes past the curtain. A single hand wanders out as well, clutching the wall tightly, and he too joins with the people in the corridor, carefully standing at a distance as he observes the commotion slightly closer. He walks over to the wall by Jun's compartment and pokes his head in there, taking a better look at the man as his fingers wrap around the edge of the curtain.

"Hello," he says over the music being played, nodding at every line break. "You are Jun Jones," he then states, his eyes growing just a smidgen darker. "Also known as the Young Man. I have heard of you."

Vic said nothing to this newcomer, merely watched him in case he tried anything funny with Jun.

(I blame my phone for getting his name wrong. :P)

The prisoner had been listening to the music quietly, with his eyes closed, nodding along. His left eye arches open at the words.

"Oh, what have you heard about me? I admit, I'm curious."

"I heard just now that you were going to die," the Jade says. "I was wondering if you knew how."

"He's due a hanging," Victoria said quietly, loud enough for the Jade to hear but hopefully not loud enough to disrupt the song.

"Yes, I believe the term is 'by the neck, until dead.' Or, maybe the Laers will have too much fun asking me questions, and rob the good people of Sevenforks their chance to witness true justice. Are you taunting me, maybe? What with a man in chains. Lady with a gun (three guns, actually) standing over him. Not very sporting, sir. But it's a cruel world, isn't it? I'm the fish, this is the barrel, you have the gun. I suppose it's human nature."

I'm the fish, this is the barrel, you have the gun. I suppose it's human nature."

"It is not all bad," says the Jade, eyes opening a little wider. "You are freed of uncertainty, no?"

He fully moves into the curtained entrance to Jun's room.

"Though not truly free of it. You must doubt that you will die somewhere inside you, yes? That you will be saved and that things will work out?"

He nods and smiles at the man.

"That is what I think will happen, yes. You will go free for now. Bullets will come whistling through the walls, the driver's throat will be slit by an unseen hand. The carriage will fly off the road, and then we shall tumble. You will be unable to free yourself of your chains for now, and will look for the key. Maybe ask someone for it amidst the wreckage. One of us - not your captor - will be able and willing to help in the new situation."

As he speaks, his outline has the vaguest hint of a shimmer that seems to exist only for an instant between two blinks of an eye, then no more.

"Or maybe your friend will enlist us to seek you out after you are found to be missing in the wreckage. It... seems unlikely, but I can picture it all too clearly. There is a measure of salvation you could obtain if everything aligns properly," Immanuel says, now properly grinning at the poor fellow, his face looking a little stretched by the effort. "I think you will be all right. Or we may need to ensure you are not."

He turns his head to look toward Victoria, his grin suddenly turned into a look of concern.

"Am I being too optimistic? Do you believe he will be freed by fate? I think he will. I almost know he will," he says to her, sounding nervous all of a sudden.

Sal leans against the back wall of the carriage, and listens to the conversation through the thin barriers around the room. As the Jade man talks about the train being ambushed, and derailed, Sal slowly reaches up to his hat brim, pulling it down over his eyes, and puts his right hand on his revolver to reassure himself. He mumbles through the hat, just barely loud enough for the others to hear.

"Don't want no part of this, don't listen to the Jade man. Get to town, go our separate ways, and I'll get back to living my life. The rest of you can live your crazy lives too, even if they ain't long."

"...My, my, that is some imagination you've got there. I'd like to borrow it sir.

You've made a lot of assumptions, right? One, assuming I have the men actually at my command, and they have the will or the reason to derail a armored carriage to free me. Two, that such an attack would in fact succeed, against no doubt determined odds-but, how could that happen if you were all paying attention, really? Three, that I would survive said attack, without catching a bullet or a blade in either error or deliberate attempt. Four, that my captor as you call her would be either tragically killed, or wounded very badly and painfully during the attack, and unable to stop me from escaping forthwith.

Really, what are the chances of all that?"
He says, his smile growing marginally wider.

"It feels like what should happen," the Jade observes. "It has a symmetry to it," he says, smiling right back. "We are all here waiting, but not for Sevenfork. All as one, restless. We can smell it, sense it, feel the itch in our spines pushing us to speak and move."

He points at Jun, then at himself. "Here are you and here am I," he rattles off, then points resolutely at the man's captor. "There is she..." he trails off, eyes wandering to the cowboy, "... and there is he."

His eyes shut slowly, and his eyebrows rise as he lifts up his chin to listen to the music better. "And there is she. Two on either side, you in the middle. But nothing is happening yet. Or is it, and we don't know it yet? What is missing before all is revealed? Something, I think. Or maybe I am reading this wrong?"

He looks down the hallway both ways again.
