Discuss my town layout
« on: March 24, 2008, 08:04:00 pm »

Alright have a look.

Red: Floor, I'll probably leave it as whatever I build on
Black: Walls, of any kind (stone, glass, wood...)
Purple: Doors, any kind
Dark Grey: Fortifications
Green: Stairs up
Light Grey: Underground passage inside (for adventurer mode maybe, who knows)
Smugly Yellow: Trade Depot

So the idea is simple. A small town with lots of rooms which can be used for workshops, stockpiles and the likes plus a wide enough street for the dwarves that shall wander about. In the middle stands a tower of # floors above Z level (as in, as high as I care about building). On ground floor is the Trade Depot, on higher floors the higher class society will have their offices, special bedrooms and the likes. The lower classes live outside town, probably in the place I dig for stone (not too far from town then). The tower is surrounded by a wall, and the town itself with another. The small 3x3 sticking out at the left is the exit/entrance of the underground passage that leads outside of town (Again, probably for adventurer mode. To add some adventuring). The small squares with stairs on each side (up, down, left, and 2 right) are towers which will have militairy units on them for some pew-pew at enemies. The fortifications will have militairy units guarding the main entrance. Farm plots will be built next to the poor society's homes outside of town, since it's their job anyways.

So, comment I guess :s

The secret underground chamber should look like this:

code:
Side View:

█X████████████████████████
█X█  \                   █
█X█Æ ☺                  X█
█X██████████████████████X█
█X                      X█
█████████████████████████&#960 8;
You found the Silver Arrows!

I would suggest you carve out or build a giant stone heart in the middle instead.  ;)

well, that's kinda boring to be honest

all looking uniform and planned

where are the eye-catchers ?
where are the small sideways ?
where are the absolutely epic constructions that are for some reason well-integrated into the fortress ?

the mountain makes the fortress, not the paper

dwarves plan as they dig, and this is how a fortress should look like

I like the design, but to be honest you shouldn't separate rooms with walls unless there's a good reason (i.e. bedrooms).  Keeping your workshop and stockpile areas as open as possible will improve efficiency.

I like the courtyard. Would look better if the ceiling was removed, but that may add problems for defense.

one of my fortress actually turns the very cliffside into the external wall. This goes up and down for 12 Z levels. Yes, it's planned like yours, but it looks pretty darn good anyway.

Unfortunately only the first two Z levels are fully granite, since I didn't have enough granite dug out yet to turn it into a real "Granite Fortress of Visionaries"

(Edit: Just Reread it, you have a big problem...
This-
A small town with lots of rooms which can be used for workshops,
Followed by this-
on higher floors the higher class society will have their offices, special bedrooms and the likes.
= Annoyed upper class.

That is pure awesome. Almost makes me consider making an entire Zelda dungeon/fortress.

Workshops generate noise that spreads for four (right?) tiles in all directions.  This includes z-levels.

This means that your sleeping quarters would need four z-levels of buffer-space between them and the workshops, otherwise folks will get disturbed from rest by industrial clankings and scratchings.

The side view secret chamber is from the last dungeon in the first Legend of Zelda game, unless I'm mistaken. While most of the game is seen from a top-down view a few places in dungeons where treasures are hidden (and some secret tunnels?) are seen from the side.
