We could give our astronauts missile launchers, capitalising on our new superior infrared homing technology.

Missile launchers don't walk themselves around the moon.

Another suggestion: we could stick an autocannon on their capsule.

We can't actually get to the moon now though.

Maybe we should upgrade our booster? Or figure out a good powersource?

I'd support improving the propellant on the Type 3000, but that could be done in a revision phase.

I dunno, if you've read the history of liquid fuel development, that would totally be a few design phases.
